OP here. A multitude of things I really can't put my finger on. I've listened to hours and hours of his material and a lot of it touches on religion and one day it just hit me. Sorry I can't explain but anon posted some good links below that you could check out

yeah i just checked them out right now. personally i've heard all of what he's said before - from other people - but i'm glad you found something you think is right. that can be really hard, especially when it involves the supernatural.

stephen fry tends to be a more persuasive atheist in general than richard dawkins.

OP here. I realise now i shouldn't have worded it like that. I just mean, we debate a lot about religion, and try and see it from each other's perspective but I'd never really been able to before from the way my friends talked about atheism.

Me either, he's so up himself you can't see him for arse and he is a zillion times less talented than he clearly thinks he is. If OP wants to think of him as some guru, fine, but OP looks like a fool for doing it.

Fucking love this man also.

Ricky Gervais is a good writer, a mediocre comedian, and a shitty person. But he's one of the most eloquent mainstream atheists out there today.

I was until today, actually.

For a long time I was one of those people who wanted to believe but "factually knew" there was nothing to believe in, but that totally changed.

Don't patronise me. Atheists don't believe - but atheism implies nothing about desires. Up until today, I wanted a higher power to be a thing that was real, for a number of reasons. Mostly fear of the beyond, I suppose - or lack of it too, maybe. That doesn't mean I wasn't an atheist, because I was. I truly could not convince myself that such a thing existed, or could exist. People don't choose their beliefs, and thusly can be very hard to change. So yes, I was an atheist. That changed naturally - I finally found a theory that made sense to me.

I think you'll find that some actually do ~want~ to believe in ~whatever~ but just find it completely illogical to do so at the same time. Just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you don't want an explanation or reason for why things are.

I think it's less "trying" than just talking about it, and OP never really saw it from their POV before, but something about the way Ricky explained it resonated with her.

Oh yeah, right. If your friends had been trying "for ages" to change your worldview and convince you to become a Muslim, I think you would agree that they needed to learn some boundaries and let you live your life. Even more so if they kept trying to convert you to a religion/worldview that didn't actually claim any benefits for you in converting, so there can't actually be even a concern for your benefit: they just have such little respect for your and your views that they want you to agree with them.

And then, yeah, how little respect would you have to have for yourself and your own views to not, at some point, say "guys, this is over the line. We've gone over this, so now just let me be".

Yes, can't be any other reason to object to it, *rolls eyes right back at you*. How about it being none of their business? Or is it A OK if atheists try to persuade theists but, of course, not the other way round?

And you reminded me of reading a piece by an atheistic journo about the son of an atheist friend of hers coming home & saying he'd become a Christian. Said "concerned parent" gathered together some similar-minded relatives/friends & sat up all night with him until he renounced his new-found belief. That...didn't sit well with me at all.
