So yeah, the moment someone makes a sweeping statement like "British TV > American TV", I automatically lose respect for them forever and cannot bring myself to give a fuck about their opinions.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it's something involving the representations of political issues like abortion in the media? Wow, you're an intellectual, analytical little mind aren't you?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Your respect for someone is based on whether or not they say they like a certain country's television more than another's?

That's...sad.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
No, "liking" something and saying something (which happens to be a very broad category) is just plain unequivocally better than another very broad category are two very different things.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Especially when it's Americans saying Brit TV >>>> US TV.... when they've seen like 4 UK programmes in their lives. (Or even better UK >>>> US, never having even been there or knowing anything about the reality of the country).

But in general i learnt in school never to made broad sweeping claims like this, ever. It makes you sound either completely ignorant or completely up yourself (as if you've seen everything ever, lol.) So, yeah, I agree with you anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
lol overtly defensive American

wait that's redundant

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, we should be more covertly defensive.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably mean "overly", but yes, this x 100.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been so long since I've watched gen 1 that for a minute I thought this really was a mislabeled secret about Liv instead of Jal, brb need to go watch that shit

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Good on her for making the decision she felt best suits her morals and circumstances.

Bad on you for making sweeping statements that reek of a cultural superiority complex.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's television! You can't have too much butthurt about "cultural superiority complex" when you're talking about TV. Take it easy, tiger.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Considering American media is the only thing most people in other countries use to evaluate my country, I think my butthurt is entitled.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
You're really pissed that someone thinks another country's television is better than American television?

Lol @ the butthurt comments above.

Why's it so bad to prefer one country's tv over another country's tv? Personally, I have always preferred British tv over American tv, not only because it doesn't seem so polished and fake as many American tv shows, but also because they don't seem as afraid to tackle issues like this.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
With you, anon, for much the same reasons.

I'm not about to make sweeping generalisations about which one is 'better', but in practice I'm far less likely to enjoy US shows, and they have to come far more highly recced for me to try them than UK ones.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I find it kind of fakey and superior as an opinion, not to mention that while American TV has had its rough patches as a medium, there are some incredibly good shows coming from Hollywood, especially now. Honestly, when I see someone say "British TV > American TV," I think what is this, 1997?

I love that British TV is developing higher production values and rich, cross-generational storylines, and there are a lot of British shows I like (Misfits, Sirens, Nine's run on Who, Miranda, etc.), but none of them have come close to Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Parks and Recreation, or Community for me.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wish USA tv had more guts when dealing with abortion. A bit more "hey, it's sometimes the right choice for the person and doesn't have to be a huge traumatizing deal" would be nice.

[identity profile] eyepatchmcgee.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
yeah this makes me happy to hear its on any tv at least! im happy to hear she isnt portrayed as selfish and evil.

Or having to pay for her sin with a whole season of mourning in sackcloth and ashes before she is judged to have atoned enough to get on with her life.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
ITA that it was nice to see abortion be portrayed as a valid choice for once. That it was okay for this young woman to make the decision that was best for her and that she wasn't judged or made to 'repent' for that decision.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Um, are you saying this type of subject doesn't happen on American TV, because, you know, this subject has been talked out in TV.

See Friday Night Lights who did a really great episode with one of the teen characters. If older people count, Maude was pretty groundbreaking when the titular character gets pregnant and decides not to have the kid because she felt she was too old to raise one (Maude was in her 50s, iirc) and Sex and the City when the main character, Carrie, reveals she got an abortion when she was in her mid-20s and she spends the episode wondering how her life would've been if she had the kid and she should she told the would-be father, only to end up re-affirming her choice as the correct for her and she didn't need some man's validation for it.

So yeah, British TV isn't so special for that.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

AGREED. AGREED AGREED AGREED

omg Jal. ♥ and also ;_______________________;

(American tv HAS dealt with this in a non-awful and fairly real way a couple of times, but whatevah :D)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You obviously haven't watched S6 (& S4) of this very programme, OP. Try giving those a shot then coming back and claiming the same.
