(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 03:26 am (UTC)(link)All the marketing in the world won't make something sell for long if people aren't responding to it. Doesn't necessarily mean it's Great Literature, but something must genuinely be clicking, and I'm not stanning this particular series.
Look, for an easy example I hate Twilight and think it's crap, but you can't just make something like that happen. If you could, the publishing industry wouldn't be in such bad shape. Even the original Star Wars was seen by many as the end of the best period of challenging and daring American filmmaking, but 35 years later it's pretty difficult to argue that the people who still love it are still just buying into the hype. For the record, I'd put THG well above Twilight and well below Star Wars, but don't condescend to people who like it by calling implying they're simply gullible sheeple for liking something popular.
