No matter what your interest is, there will always be people who dislike it and will voice their opinions on it. You really shouldn't let that put you off from discussing something you love.

There was a ton of Twilight hate online before the movies. They just exacerbated it.

I for one can't wait for that to happen. THG suffers from the same problems that Twilight does, despite how much it tries to prove otherwise.

I doubt something like that would happen, considering that Twilight is much more badly written than Hunger Games.

The book was always an atrociously written piece of shit that reads like a whitewashed, family friendly version of Battle Royale. You already look like a fool fawning over it online.

Ugh, sometimes I think this is a totally valid worry, tbh. This morning I was looking at the reviews that just came out for the film, and pretty much all of them started off by comparing it to Twilight. It annoys the shit out of me because, aside from having a female protagonist and being popular? They have nothing in common. I mean, sure, all of them were saying it was better than Twilight, but I hate that people seem to connect them for some reason. Of course it's going to lead people who don't know better than to think they're similar.

I'm sure there will be bandwagon haters, but this happens with pretty much every book/comic book fandom that gets turned into a movie.

There will be some legitimate issues/complaints and there will be people who basically get their joy from trashing something and want to prove how cool they are by how much they hate something.

I will say that The Hunger Games is better written and the males don't give me the creepy stalker vibe like Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
People don't hate on Twilight because of it's hype, people hate on Twilight because it's bloody awful writing and characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
too late the peeta vs gale shit is everywhere

[identity profile] streussal.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think Hunger Games will never reach Twilight level hate, because they're different genres (aside from being YA). Vampire romance has some disdain already attached to it, no matter the quality. Especially high school vampire romance.

Sorry OP, it's probably going to happen (it even happened with Harry Potter!). There's always going to be some people who didn't enjoy the story and if it's everywhere they're going to get sick of it and probably get annoyed. There are also people who get turned off by things that seem huge/have a fuss made over them*
And of course there's the people who compare it to Battle Royale - some claiming rip-off, some just commenting on the differences, some like the troll above. They're not really worth the time, because there's nothing wrong with a similar theme if you can still enjoy it/read it. (BR wasn't my type of book, but HG was.)

But if you love it, discuss away! I'm the only person in my entire circle of friends who has read and enjoyed it (perspective: only 1 of my friends has read it - he didn't enjoy). But I'm still expressing my excitement over the upcoming movie and a friend of mine is helping me find one of those pins so I can wear it on my jacket and be quietly nerdy/pleased over having one. I don't mind my little sandbox of happy and I just shrug off my friend's comments (or laugh back) and try not to take it seriously because although I greatly enjoyed the book - it is just a book.

The only harm I can see IS all the Twilight comparisons because, beyond female main character and maybe the 4 pages of mutts, there is no resemblance? Even the fandom isn't all over the place IRL. So my concern would be the fact it's compared to Twilight (badly written shit IMO) would turn people off.It made me keep my distance.
And maybe the "love triangle" that was handled neatly by guys going "dude, we'll let her choose and be cool with it"

BUT reading choices are definitely subjective and there will be people out there who genuinely didn't like it and are probably sick of hearing about it because they didn't enjoy it.

*I do, I take forever to get into something if it's already gigantic and well known. i.e. AtlA. Hunger Game's saving grace is it isn't too huge where I live so I could get into slowly (and by accident, I bought the wrong book. I was after Games of Thrones but forgot the proepr title)

Sorry, but it's already happening. I, for one, am totally suffering from hype backlash with this series.

I absolutely don't care about this movie. In fact, I don't care much for this series at all. People tripping over themselves to talk about how awesome it is have turned me off. Now, I've read both the Twilight saga and The Hunger Games trilogy, so I'm aware that The Hunger Games doesn't have quite as many issues as Twilight has. But it has issues, and a lot of people seem to be completely oblivious to that. I don't diss THG for the sake of dissing it, but hearing people talk about how Absolutely Awesome!(TM) it is has seriously started grating on my nerves, and now I instinctively focus on the issues in THG that so many other people seem to not see.

If you want to talk about THG, you should feel free to. But by the same token, other people are free to dislike it or be unimpressed by it, too. There's not much you can do about it.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
One key difference: Hunger Games is actually good.

Idk. I think it's a common/understandable worry, but I'm reading the books now and they're living up to the hype for me. Love what you love and screw what other people think.

[identity profile] faeiri.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It always bothers me when it happens. People like things; other people don't like those things. It shouldn't be a point to mock. At the same time, though, it does kind of happen for everything, no matter how popular or how good--because good is subjective, after all. I just don't think the backlash really matters. (Even though it bothers me easily too. This is your hypocritical comment of the day!)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get the whole "other people like this so I must hate it or pick it apart" mentality. People can enjoy something even if they know it's problematic. I think the ones who start whining about how everyone is so "crazy" over something are just looking for something in life to be pissed off at.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
There's going to be a bit of hating, sure, but THG is lacking in the special things that make Twilight so very hated: the passive and bland heroine, the really shitty writing, the stalkeriffic hero, etc.

[identity profile] myrioddity.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
...look, comparing Twilight & The Hunger Games doesn't really make much sense to me. :( It keeps happening. THG has some romance in it, Twilight is centered entirely around romance. They're written (I thought) for different audiences, in completely different settings, one's supernatural and one's completely not, so...what?

I don't even like either of them, but they seem like completely different things to bitch about!

Like, Twilight suffers from having a passive, whiny protagonist in a (kind of hilariously, IMHO) melodramatic and awfully written narrative, with, er...problematic implications. Really, really problematic. As about a zillion people have pointed out.

The Hunger Games...well, I think it's got a boring (but not passive!) protagonist plowing through a suspenseful plot set in a weirdly baseless and generic dystopia. And the writing's like plywood: functional, but dull and lacking in character.

I can't see THG becoming a fandom/hatedom wank-fest nearly as much as Twilight has, just because THG simply isn't as...provocative. Yeah, the violent dystopian action trilogy is less provocative than the high school vampire romance. :/ Not to say that Twilight's provocative for good reasons, it's provocative because it fails to notice that its wish-fulfillment fantasies are creepy and alarming. Still, it would be kind of nice if The Hunger Games had enough bite to incite some spirited discussion in its own right, not about whether it sucks as much as Twilight or not.

it's too bad people can't help themselves from dissing on what other people like. my friends ridicule me for liking twilight, and it's not really meant to be mean or anything, but seriously, why? we all like different things for so many different reasons. there are a lot of really quality things out there that i don't like for some reason or another, as well. i don't know why people get so aggressive about things they like, anyway.

THG will never get the level of hate that Twilight does, because it's never going to be as bad as Twilight. Any popular fandom will get haters, but something has to be a special level of awful to get the kind of hatred that Twilight does. And that's taking into account that, in a lot of ways, the Twilight movies improved on the books.

[identity profile] three-sixth.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say that the love triangles in both series are very similar. The love interests are both questionable, and the side interests are perhaps better people. Both books have issues.

They are two different genres. When deals with trauma and war, while the other deals with nothing else besides the romance. The protagonist of the Hunger Games is also much stronger.

I think the movie won't directly bring trouble, but the attention it brings to the book will. The fact of the matter is the Hunger Games is a young-adult book; the series isn't aimed toward older readers and such some parts will seem immature to older audiences.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well atleast Karniss kinda does shit for herself..Bella is just a suicidal clingy vampire ho.

Thank you for posting this. I always wanted to post something like it, but never quite knew how to say it.

I am glad to know I am not the only one who worries about this.

I guess I saw the book differently than other people. I thought the writing was sort of bland and straightforward because that's the kind of person Katniss is, and she's the narrator. It didn't really bother me.

But it's all right if people don't like it, that is understandable too. I am just worried that the hate will reach Twilight-levels, and that sort of thing is a lot harder to ignore than someone saying "I don't like it because of x, y, and z" here and there.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Can't wait for the haters to seethe in the explosion of post-movie squee tbh. So tired of fun-suckers who spend more energy hating THGs than the fans spend loving it. I scrolled on by Homestruck and Inception and every other Thing of the moment that didn't interest me and I managed to do it without snarking or trying to ruin anyone else's fun. I believe THGs haters can do it, too! THGs haters make Trollvel laugh.

I am drinking margaritas now, so angry replies to this comment may get amusing responses, fair warning.
