Are these books good? The premise sounds like Mojo World and it seems very teen-oriented. Is it good lit or more like popcorn books?

Personally, I would consider the series popcorn books. It's interesting enough to compel you to read through all three books, but I thought the pacing was too fast and a lot of concepts/characters I wanted to know more of ended up being under-developed. Also, I feel that the third book...just wasn't that great in comparison to the other two; I understand what the author was trying to do but it felt like she changed too much simply for her message (but that's just my opinion).

Thank you. I see a lot of people are very into this series but it doesn't seem too appealing. Maybe I'll watch the films and then decide.

I think they're .... potentially think-y popcorn books? It's all about how you read things, what you take from the concepts, and whether or not the hooks, well, hook you. For me, the concepts are inherently interesting and inspire all kinds of awesome discussions and thoughts because I love dystopian stories about repressive governments and kids in horrifying situations, and I love the sicko reality TV element. If those things don't call to you, you might not get much literary enjoyment out of it. They're fast paced and very action-oriented, and the author is great at battle sequences and action scenes. But characterization isn't her strong suit, so you kind of have to fill in blanks if you want to enrich the background characters. Now, I LOVE doing this, so that's only a plus for me, but if you want it already in your books and the concepts don't hook you, they might not be for you.

Thank you. The concept sounds interesting, like Mojo World, but I've heard the books aren't big on world building and characterisation and that's important to me. I think I'll watch the films first.

Somewhere in-between, I'd say. The themes are quite mature, though the execution is uneven. Collins' prose is uninspired, though she has a gift for action sequences and building suspense.

It's actually a case where a really well-done movie could turn out better than the book.

Thank you. I'll watch the films and then decide if I try the books.

'It's actually a case where a really well-done movie could turn out better than the book.'

Completely agree! I think the writing was a major disadvantage in the book. The movies will bring out the tension Collins was trying to get at, I think.
