This is a little OT, but I'm so happy Adele has made it this far. She has a beautiful voice and I'm glad she is recognised for that. I don't think she's ugly either; I think she's rather pretty. My facial structure is similar to hers and I have always, always felt ugly looking in the mirror. But now that I realise how pretty others think Adele is, it's led me to believe that maybe, with confidence, people will think the same of me someday too. It's been a tremendous self esteem booster, silly as it sounds.

Oh Adele is absolutely gorgeous, and I'm sure you are too.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
She looks fine to me...? Who is she?

Adele

My mom and I are glad she's got some substance to her physically, being big ladies ourselves. It's a comforting fact to know that my fav English-language singer isn't all that concerned with physical appearance and instead focuses on doing what she loves. I totally respect her for that.

Though I do wish she'd cut down on the swearing.

Oh for fuck's sake...

Yeah, yuck to those petty girls that concern themselves with their physical appearance. It's not like society ingrains this in them for their entire lives or anything.

FFS.

why can't people be concerned with their physical appearance and do what they love at the same time?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
In a way I'm glad she's not. Not because I want her to be a role model or anything but I would hate to see people focusing on Adele dat ass dem tits fap fap fap instead of her singing ability. Removing the "hawt bod" part cuts out most of that stuff. Honestly if Adele looked like 19 year old Britney Spears, people wouldn't be taking her as seriously.

i think she's hot.

True (only somewhat random) story: I was hanging out with some dudes watching MTV (we were in a hotel in the middle of nowhere with nothing else to do) and an Adele video came on. Both dudes immediately said something like "That's what she looks like? Man, I like her voice and all but wish she just stayed off camera."

And then I beat the shit out of them, tore apart the hotel and walked off into the sunset never to be heard from again.

I think she's a beautiful person - character, voice, and body.

Random comment on what you think Adele looks like versus reality ... I remember listening to an NPR interview with her a couple of years ago, maybe less, and I thought she was black, by her voice and singing. Her age and ethnicity really surprised me when I saw her later on. think it was the deepness of her voice, it reminded me of other black British women I'd heard speaking.

a) she's not fat. b), no, it wouldn't. Not if people stopped being asshats and focused on her beautiful voice, not her looks.

I wonder if her fame were different if she had an ugly face.

Different how? Like, would she still be famous? Or would there be a lot more scantily clad dancing? Or what?

I think she would still be famous, definitely, she's got a hell of a voice. As for the rest, who can say? I think she might be pushed more in that scantily clad direction, which could push her style of music to something would fit that better, which might actually hurt her fame, honestly, because she'd be a lot more like a lot of other artists.

I really love Adele. I love that style of sangin'. I'm glad she exists as she is because she supports the idea that you don't need to be a waif to be pretty. She's also evidence that video doesn't have to kill the radio star.

I just typed a lot and I'm not even sure I'm talking about the same thing you are.

I think she would still be popular if she looked different. I know a lot of people love her because she's herself and not trying to live up to the skinny pop star ideal, myself included. But I loved her music long before I found out what she looked like. For some reason when I first heard her songs I was expecting someone a lot older.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, maybe not. It really depends on what you mean by 'different'. Would she probably be treated differently? Yes, im multiple ways. By the same token, I think she'd still be famous - her voice is what got her there.

Personally I'd like to see her sing about anything *but* being dumped.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
She's a beloved award winning music icon who is known world wide by her first name. I think her weight hasn't held her back ... at all.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
It might be. She'd certainly be written about differently, in any case. I'd like to see what would happen if she wasn't attractive at all--she's big, which the media generally seems to find unappealing, but she's got an absolutely gorgeous face, not to mention that hair. But I'd like to see how they'd describe her if she was that talented but really, genuinely homely...actually, I wouldn't; it'd probably piss me off.

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard anyone comment on her looks, and I think she looks perfectly fine, so at least from my point of view I think her musical style would have gotten her this far no matter what she looked like.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I personally love that she's portrayed the way she is. She's extremely talented, so I'm sure she'd get as much recognition if she were thin (though it's kind of hard to say she'd get even more considering how far she's come), but it wouldn't be the same type of recognition. Her entire image would be different and IMO she wouldn't be nearly as interesting, more like a cardboard cutout of the last big superstar. She's showing the industry that you don't have to be bone thin and unhealthy looking to be beautiful, or focus nearly entirely on looks over talent to get noticed, and I love that about her.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it would. She would be more overexposed, be considered "hot", probably do sexy photoshoots, and more guys would be listening to her music

(Anonymous) 2012-03-21 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly think that if Adele was an American and had tried to start her career in America, she would never in a million years become as popular as she is today. Maybe if she was an African-American, but even then I don't know how successful she would have been. The only reason why she caught on over here at all is because most people heard her music and fell in love with her amazing voice before they ever saw what she looked like.
