It's really racist.

I also think the movie is incredibly overrated in general, even aside from the racism. The pacing is weird, the main character and relationship rings false...

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh MTE. The love interest guy is such a huge douchebag, I couldn't believe they ended up together in the end after all.

I can get over the racism because those were the times, but the rest of the problems...

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He was a douchebag? Seriously? Admittedly it's been a couple years since I last saw this movie but I don't remember him being a douchebag at all. If I had to pick one of them as a douchebag it would be her (I still love her character because she was so fucking EPIC in a million different ways, but she was also kind of assholish at certain points).

He ruined it for me, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the movie for Audrey Hepburn, but yeah, I fast-forward through his scenes. They are horrible.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What's this movie?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Breakfast at Tiffany's

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
*double checks anon* Every time I watch this movie I actually laugh my ass off at him and then feel bad about it. I mean, it's not the racist stereotype that's funny to me -- it's that the character was just plain funny, and somehow I couldn't bring myself to care about the stereotype part. Which makes me guilty.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Although, I also think the character would've been equally funny if he'd been some uptight white guy - it was his reactions to her, not the fact he was "Asian," for me. (In fact, in the party scene, I was far more amused by the cat sitting up above it all looking like it's deciding where to pounce next.)

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're that worried about it, maybe read the book instead?

Or, like already mentioned, FF through his scenes - they're pretty pointless. Hell, *he* was even mortified by that whole thing.

[identity profile] imnotasquirrel.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think the director and producer were mortified too. IIRC, on the anniversary edition DVD, they were apologizing and saying how they wished they could have gone back and recast it. Wiki tells me that the producer actually wanted an actor of Japanese ethnicity in the first place, too. I mean, I guess even with a recast, there would still have been the problem of the character being a total caricature, but at least the people involved seem to realize what a mess the character was.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Though I love Audrey Hepburn, I would be very happy if this movie was someday remade just for the sake of not having such a gross racist stereotype in it.

(Of course, given the state of Hollywood, that would probably just end in them whitewashing him instead of making the effort to try turning him into a rounded character who isn't played by a white man squinting).

You might be interested in the fic here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/38014 It was written for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide a couple of years back, in response to a request for something where he wasn't a racist caricature. The same request also lead to this one: http://archiveofourown.org/works/34474 that spins it in a whole different way.

This reminds me of a hilarious secret we had here, where they had headcanon that he was actually a white guy who believed he was Japanese.

Anyone got a link to that?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that. That's actually now my personal canon. XD

Yes! I was thinking about that as i read these comments. :)

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations. You've discovered the problem everybody else has with that movie for the past 50 years! Cookie? ;-)

It's still a good movie, IMO. I mean, that fail aside, it shows two characters who really aren't good people, who you kind of like anyway in spite of it, and kind of why they're so screwed up. Although I will never not be pissed off at her for throwing the cat out in the end, and I will always like Peppard's character a little more for not abandoning it. (Yes, I'm one of those people who prefers to see the animals treated well, LOL.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think I once read that Audrey Hepburn was quoted saying that throwing the cat out was "the most distasteful thing she'd ever done" or something like that.

The only way I can get through this movie is if I follow the advice of a secret that was on here a while ago and pretend Mickey Rooney's character is just some crazy white dude who's convinced he's Asian.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I do this as well. Oh Mickey Rooney, you old kook!

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeeah, that was bad. The movie's iconic and all, but I recommend the novella more; it's a LOT different and better, IMO. The movie kind of sugar-coated everything. Apparently Capote wasn't happy, though he wasn't really happy with much ever.

[identity profile] unsernameinuse.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
?..tthis character is on for a grand total of what, five minutes? Seperate from the origional story its a really good movie. Its not about the politics or whetherthe little Japanese man was proporly portrayed *eye roll* its about style, man. Style. The whole film, to me, is just beauty.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like a douche.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the movie at all, but he's the worst thing in it.

[identity profile] edgyspice.livejournal.com 2012-03-19 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't care for Blake Edwards movies in general and the racism just made the movie even worse for me.
