NGI, I know it was an obvious case of pair the spares, but I love the idea of Martha and Mickey and I'm so sad we didn't get to see them teamed up on Torchwood as was originally planned.

Martha/Mickey >>>> Martha/Tom. Tom was basically just a blank slate to ~prove that she was over the Doctor. He didn't have a real personality or character. Mickey on the other hand was a fully formed character, so while it definitely did seem very "pair the spares", I still like him better for her than Tom. I will forever be pressed that we didn't get to see them together in CoE though

Really? I loved Tom - the way he idolised her so easily in the series 3 finale (how many men are so happy to be outshone by a woman they're attracted to?) and he was literally willing to die for her. I think there was potential there that was just never explored. Do we even know why they broke up?

I love Martha, but I'm glad she wasn't on CoE, because I loved Lois Habiba as well... I think the moment her standing up to the government would have been less powerful if it had been Martha, who by then we knew to be incredibly badass. I liked the fact that it was an ordinary woman resisting, without superpowers or anything - just as I love the way Martha saved the day in DW.

I agree. I would have loved to have more Martha, but Lois was awesome because she didn't have the badass background of being a companion and she still found the strength to stand up to the government.
