NS3 - I think a lot of people really miss the whole point of Katniss' character. Actually, I think a lot of people really miss the overall point and story of the entire series. She doesn't seem to have emotional depth because she's living in survival mode. The entire story is about the toll war takes on societies and culture and how that will change how a person views the world. She is not an average teenager in our world, she is a teenager from a war-torn dystopian future who has had an extremely different upbringing and traumatic life. There is *so much* emotional depth in the very lack of emotion from that character.

Thank you!

The point was she had locked herself down and focused all of her caring and emotions on her family. Couldn't focus on anything else. And then it was all about the games, which tangentially was still about saving her family and district.

This. I find people judge these characters by regular standards--the standards they'd judge their friends in everyday life. But the circumstances make things completely different.

It's like the way people see Gale. Most fans judge him very harshly for his rage and willingness to kill Capitol people. But I feel like if all the fans were put in his position, they'd be pretty much the same as he was. He was forced to watch his friends and neighbours get killed in barbaric games for the entertainment of these Capitol people, got whipped to an inch of death for daring to break a rule, and then watched the vast majority of the people in his district get burned and bombed to death. If he was just a guy sitting at home comfortably on his couch, cheering on an army to kill innocent people, then yeah, I'd think he was scum. But wanting vengeance and going a bit too far because of the trauma he suffered? It's a different situation.

So yeah, I don't judge her by regular standards, either.

I SO AGREE. csb but this is one of the reasons why I shipped them - Katniss and Gale are both very clearly a product of their environment. Peeta doesn't read like a District 12 guy at all. Enough so that it even got pointed out in the narration that he came from a place of privilege and unlike many of them he never ever went hungry, but still.

Right. I didn't really like Katniss, but to say she has no emotional depth and dismiss her is to ignore the overall implications and ramifications of the world that created her.

Yes, thank you, I was going to come here to say just this.
