I still can't believe people ditch their starter. Really?!
My only strategy is having the more basic types covered, so I can have a bit of everything. But those are usually in my first 8 or so catches. Some new guys might make it on to the A team, but I always keep the first catches around.

I get way too emotionally attached to just not use the first Pokemon I catch. XD

I ditch the starters because I've trained too many of them. Especially third gen, I can recall Mudkip and Torchic's move sets and the levels they learn them with evolving off the top of my head. It gets boring when I know the Pokemon that well already, and since there's only six spaces, I want to train Pokemon I don't use as often so things are more interesting for me.
