This is adorable. Personally, I tend to keep both my starter and my first catch on my team. :D

I'm exactly the same. It's my rule that I have to play through the entire game with the first six Pokémon I catch. It's fun, and I like imagining that they're my friends etc. Pokémon games are my Mary Sue self-insert fantasies.

Ever heard of the Nuzlocke Challenge/comics? The sentiment of being attached to a Pokemon you first catch is why I enjoy it as much as I do, and I've trained a lot of weaker/odd Pokemon by following the Nuzlocke rules. It's not that different from what you do :D

I was shocked to learn that a lot of people don't keep their starter, and now I'm shocked to learn that not everybody keeps their first catch around... Even when I take my first catch off my "A" team, I always level it up alongside them ;A;

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I adore this secret and kudos to you. While I'm not against strategists, the elitist types who only want the most powerful types kinda rub me the wrong way. It kills the meaning of the game to me. I much prefer using homebrew teams over the typical boring and not to mention overused sets.

[identity profile] xxsomeoneelsexx.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really had a "strategy" to these games but I almost always kept a lot of the first ones I caught on my team. And my starter.

I don't think they're inherently inferior either. I had a pretty badass Butterfree this one time...

Hm? I've always heard that the storyline part of the game was so easy you could get away with whatever mons you wanted. It's only when you go into the competitive scene and the Battle Whatevers that you need to worry about building a team, and that only because you can't cheat with level grinding and healing items.

One of the elite four leaders in gold/silver... the dark-type trainer? she said something that blew my tiny child mind: Real trainers should try to win with their favorites. that line always stuck with me... Besides!! So many of those pokemon's evolved forms are amazing! Quagsire is a beast.

I do this too!

[identity profile] august-suns.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I still can't believe people ditch their starter. Really?!
My only strategy is having the more basic types covered, so I can have a bit of everything. But those are usually in my first 8 or so catches. Some new guys might make it on to the A team, but I always keep the first catches around.

I get way too emotionally attached to just not use the first Pokemon I catch. XD

This is really cute. :) I do it too, but mostly because I plan my team before playing the game and generally don't catch any other pokémon until the ones I want show up.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just getting into Pokemon for the first time and this is being a struggle for me; my most powerful Pokemon are really not my favorites, but when I go back to train the ones I like better, their so much weaker and I don't always have the patience for all the levelling because there are just so many. :(

I don't always keep my starter or my first catch, but I always build my team based on pokemon that I like. If I don't like it, I won't train it, no matter how good it is. I'll take Flygon over Garchomp any day of the week.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Whenever I played pokemon, I used to love catching the starters and would level them up constantly and they would be the strongest inmy team. I love Rattatta that much that I caught two, stopped one from evolving and leveled them both up to level 100, one rattatta and one ratacaite. (spelled right?) these days, because i feel like the games are just getting really boring and repetative, I can't be bothered feeling attached to them when I play. :(

(sorry for the spelling mistakes)

I fell in love with my shinx in Diamond, and it's always a part of my time.

[identity profile] puckyducky.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, it even got to the point where in white I have 8 very average early-catch pokémon on my team. Yes. Eight. Because there were two I couldn't leave behind when I ran into two others I wanted, so I switched out regularly and trained them all as equals.

I even made a point out of it to make sure all of them got to fight in a gym battle! And even tried to make it so a different pokémon got to kick ass and win the last fight in a gym... They all needed glory moments, really.

Oh and in pokémon silver (I think?) I even beat the elite four with an unevolved togepi and pichu on my team because I thought they were super cute and needed to stay the way they were and still wanted to take them to the elite four to let them kick ass! Even if any other 'real life' trainer could make them faint by having their pokémon blink at them.

[identity profile] liete.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Shinx was the first Pokemon I caught in Diamond and my Luxray at the end of the game was probably the best damn Pokemon I've managed to train ever. I'm still very attached, ha ha.

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
You mean some people don't? I mean, not gonna lie, I switch out some of them, but for the most part, I keep my pokemons close to my first six or so.

And my Shinx (Voltaire!) is still my favorite.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, Shinx is NOT useless (favourite electric type...) But I agree with HootHoot. I was disappointed in my Noctowl, but thinking these thoughts make me feel like hating my own kid, so I try not to admit to it. But at least it can learn Fly, so I couldn't bear to part with it.

[identity profile] lorinadante.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I usually keep a lot of my first catch in my team, or always make a point to train the pokémons I like instead of the ones that are considered more powerful! Raticate will always have a place in my teams, he's the one that keep saving my ass everyime I have to fight Lance and his stupid dragons. :p Oh, and I am currently replaying Soulsilver with a Nidoking in my team for the first time since I played Pokemon Red when I was a kid. I don't care what people say: Nidoking is AWESOME.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I would probably do that if I didn't always cave and end up making all eevelution teams. I just can't help myself.

Black was actually the first pokemon game I played where I DIDNT keep my starter. Because I could get Victiny so early in the game, I basically considered him my starter and kept him on my team throughout the game. Even if he's not my most powerful, he's an awesome little bugger.

My strategy since the original games was always to stay with the team I had, and if I found a pokemon I adored, then replace it with one I didn't care about as much and level him up. I usually adore my starters (I don't know why black is the exception to this) but every game I ALWAYS had to have a Dragonair. That species has always enchanted me since the original. Luxray is the second pokemon to become my "gotta have" teammate, and I really wanna add Victiny to the list, but I doubt ill be able to raise one like I did for this game...

Long story short; my team is built around specific types of pokemon I love. Ill take the first shins and dratini I find and raise them, and until then I build a cute team that can balance around a dragon and electric type. I don't really care if they're not the strongest of their types, especially since I don't do competitive battling, I just love the first one I find (or hatch if they're too high level to train) and raise it. That's pretty much what Ive done since RBY. ^^;

[identity profile] x0whitelily0x.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I know that feel, OP. Most times I actually just stick with the first six I find, come hell or high water, because I get so attached to the ones I've had from the very beginning. Although it can be a little annoying when my favorite species don't appear until much later in the game, when I can't bear to switch anyone in my team out to make room for them. Like Absol sob.
