Just because it's mainstream doesn't mean it's a okay to have shitty females characters

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe the OP's point was instead of watching mainstream shows they should watch nonmainstream shows without shitty female characters and support those instead?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe the OP should understand that unpopular woman-positive shows aren't a substitute for ending misogyny everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
hi op

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I'm not the OP believe it or not. I just don't think the OP was trying to imply that it's ok for mainstream shows to have shitty characters. Looking elsewhere doesn't mean letting the fail ones pass without complaint. You could point out the shitty ones and support the good ones at the same time? Idk

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
If the OP thinks that criticism of the bad shows was okay, why would they say that the critics "deserve" to be upset? Why do women DESERVE to be upset by misogynist media any time, any place?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I could be wrong but it looked to me more like "Shounen anime is fun and it's not meant to have good female characters so stop complaining."

Which is kind of ridiculous as it's a huge category of work so I don't see why it should get a free pass on criticism. (I think there are good female characters in it though.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I got from it, too. Which is ridiculous, since it is a huge category, like you said. (And yeah, there are good female characters that exist in some shounen series.)

BALSA! ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm not going to lie-- there aren't many kickass female characters like Balsa in anime. That said, I can still name a bunch off the top of my head.

Re-L (Ergo Proxy)
Revy (Black Lagoon)
Yuichi, Morimoto (Bleach)
Tsunade, Kurenai, Temari (Naruto)
Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)
Saya (Blood +)
Teresa, Clare (Claymore)
Yankumi (Gokusen)
San (Princess Mononoke)
Faye (Cowboy Bebop)
Melissa (Full Metal Panic)
Izumi, Riza (Full Metal Alchemist)
Arcueid (Shingetsutan Tsukihime)
Austa (Trinity Blood)
Lina (Slayers)

And she's not "kick ass" but she's still damn cool: Moyoko (Hataraki Man)

That chick from Coyote Ragtime Show (whatever her name is) is kickass. There's also a kickass fem char (chars?) in Mnemosyne. And Gilgamesh. And Hellsing. And Jyu-Oh-Sei. And I think there was a really kick ass girl in Texhnolyze. And HS of the Dead. And etc. I'm crap with names so I can't remember them all.

I think most FMA female characters are pretty awesome and kickass -- Winry (especially in the manga and/or Brotherhood), Pinako, Maria Ross, Olivier Armstrong (manga/Brotherhood), Lan Fan (manga/Brotherhood)...

And out of the baddies, Dante/Lyra and Lust.

I believe you forgot Motoko from Ghost in the Shell and the original Saya from Blood the Last Vampire.

Plus there's Miyazaki's stuff.

Yuichi, Morimoto (Bleach)

*Yoruichi and Matsumoto

I felt the same way about the women in shonen series for a long, long time. Then I was introduced to One Piece (the shonen series in Japan today), and it changed everything for me... I fully admit there's shitloads of fanservice and cheesecake with the ladies, but they own it and still kick equally as much ass as the male characters do. It's not perfect, but I'll take it.

It's not that women in shonen series can't be awesome and badass, it's simply that the creators choose not to make them that way.

This, pretty much. I'm a major fan of sports/game anime/manga (which tend to be shounen, though aren't always) and I can honestly say that finding a kickass female character in those series would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Possible (if you're lucky), but so damn rare. :(

I think the main issue is the (general, though not absolute) Japanese perception of the "ideal/sexy" woman.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here.

And very confused, since this secret was made and originally posted, idk, three years ago, maybe? As nearly as I can remember, it was mostly made in a fit of pique because I was sick of people totally ignoring the strong, badass female characters who do exist, like Balsa up there.

I can't really defend or even speak to the wording, since in all honesty I can't remember what was going through my head at the time.

There are some people who keep submitting really old secrets. Don't know what their purpose is, but I guess they want the posts to have more secrets?

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the on;y one who kinda prefers it when there are fewer secrets?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes, you are.*

More secrets isn't always a good thing. We know there are some people who post tons of secrets about one fandom(HAY STAR WARS GUY, I SEE YOU), and this is very boring. Those are easy to weed out, though. In general, more secrets means more chances for people to find something relevant to them. I'd rather see more than less.

*I'm sure there are people who agree with you, but you left me an opening. Had to take it.
