I have a "daemon", but I don't see it as a religious or spiritual thing at all. It's more of a way of thinking.
This is how I see it, OP. Your daemon IS you. Not a soul, but the way you see yourself. I don't see it as an actual animal spirit thing that follows you around, but as more of a way to "trick" yourself into being honest with yourself. And trying to pick which animal matches you best requires that you deeply analyze who you are as a person. It's always been more of a psychological thing to me.

This is coming from a fellow atheist :)

I have one too, and see it exactly the same as you said. (Though I'm a Christain, it's not a religious thing at all.) It's pretty much just a mental projection of the 'voice inside your head', the other side of your mental conversation. Nothing spiritual or mystical about it.
