But... wasn't HDM a very atheist story? It's about how God lied to the angels and everyone, and is basically Pullman saying organized religion is crap so being kind to people is more important than caring about who is sinning and all that.

I re-read the series a few months ago, did I miss something?

I don't think you need to believe in God to choose which would be your daemon.

I have a "daemon", but I don't see it as a religious or spiritual thing at all. It's more of a way of thinking.
This is how I see it, OP. Your daemon IS you. Not a soul, but the way you see yourself. I don't see it as an actual animal spirit thing that follows you around, but as more of a way to "trick" yourself into being honest with yourself. And trying to pick which animal matches you best requires that you deeply analyze who you are as a person. It's always been more of a psychological thing to me.

This is coming from a fellow atheist :)

Wat. Being an atheist shouldn't stop you from thinking about fiction.

[identity profile] lady-kinky-chan.livejournal.com 2012-03-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The theistic Church/Magisterium in the HDM universe are the ones against Daemons.

They're the one's severing the psychic/spiritual link between children and their literal soul mates.

The atheists(or rather anti-theists) are the guys protecting daemons.

So yeah, if anything being an atheist is a plus for you to be pro-daemon.

I'm not sure what my daemon would be, probably something very quick and finicky, like a rabbit or deer.

What kind of bird exactly is that?

Cute daemon. I never could decide whether mine would be a fox or some kind of corvid. And yeah, I'm an atheist, what of it? ;)

[identity profile] madrigog.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't matter if you're an atheist, OP - it's fun to think about! It's hard for me to imagine what mine would be because I have no set notions of which traits correspond to which animals.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
As others have pointed out, Pullman is an atheist. There's no conflict between atheism and enjoying the idea of what your daemon would be. As for me, I bet it would be a sloth...

haha. Are you me? (Mine would be a yellow billed magpie. I saw him once when I was epically stoned.) But I'm an atheist, so I don't really believe. (Or do I?)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, anon, you're not the only one.

I'm an atheist, but I know all about my daemon. I know he'd be a he (despite me also being male, lol), that he'd be a maned wolf, that before he settled down he spent a lot of time as a crow. I even know what his name would be.

I don't think of daemons as a religious thing. It's just another way of thinking about who you are.

I don't really have much to say about the content, but "the most atheist atheist to ever atheist" made me lol pretty hard. A nice turn of phrase, I think. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
How does your being an atheist have any bearing on your relation to a piece of fiction? Pretty sure most people who like to sort themselves into Hogwarts houses don't actually believe in magic...

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
HDM aside, I am an Atheist too. That doesn't stop me from enjoying fiction with theist characters or deities.

I'm pretty sure that most people who've read the books or seen the movie have wondered what their daemon would be. When I did the official test on the Golden Compass site it gave me a lynx, but I'm not entirely sure about it anymore. Daemons are fun to speculate about, it doesn't have to do with any kind of theistic belief.

I don't think being an atheist should stop you from enjoying a fictional concept any more than, like, not believing people with superpowers exist should stop you from enjoying superhero comics.

I've read that series too many times to count and yet sadly I've never sat down and thought about what my daemon would be like.

I'm an Atheist too; to me the stories from the bible are just interesting stories, so I have no qualms about reading fiction based on that fiction. You'll find a lot of fantasy is based on the bible, but funnily enough a lot of people don't know that - so I get a shock when I read anti-HDM sentiments from Christians, saying it's an anti-God story when it's actually a retelling of Adam and Eve. Pullman has gotten a lot of shit for writing this fantastic series and being an Atheist, so please enjoy them~ ^^

Yes, I've thought about this extensively. Yes, I'm an atheist.

[identity profile] liyosa.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm annoyingly atheist (when I mean annoying, I only retaliate with spiky quills whenever someone tries to convince me otherwise. Spent 16 years trying to get into Christianity, didn't work for me, works for you, cool, but don't try dragging me into it again). But yeah, daemons are just a way of expressing yourself in a fantasy sort of setting. Or how you view yourself.

I'm the raven in my icon btw. He was cranky, hopping around and glaring at all the tourists, but was kind enough to let me take a picture. So. Yeah. I kind of identify with birds though - short of attention span, given to laughing raucously at the most inappropriate moments, and annoying. :P

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I am also the most atheist atheist ever to atheist and my daemon is a hare, so. :P In my experience there's really not that much of a correlation between 'interested in daemons' and 'religious/spiritual'.

[identity profile] johnjie.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Jumping on the bandwagon -

I am an atheist, but have thought extensively about the philosophical and practical implications of daemons.

ps.: mine would be an ocelot.
