My mum always complains about that scene "why does he have to be having sex with her? It's just pandering to titillation, it's not in the book!" and so on and so on. But the more I've read about the themes surrounding vampire fiction the more I've realised been bitten can be interpreted as a sexual and/or invasive thing so I guess all this film did was combine being bitten with a sexual act to hammer home the message. Also there's themes along those lines in the book, just a bit more subtle (and to modern eyes quite sexist.) So now I'm older I've started to question whether or not my mum actually read the book!

Sorry OP. I didn't mean to go all srs bsnss on you. It is in some ways a sexually charged scene...if you like that sort of thing. I guess. Plus the thing underneath all that fur is meant to be Gary Oldman and he is quite hot in that film when he actually looks normal.

Basically, that movie turned pretty much all the subtext into text. YMMV on whether that's an improvement or not.

But if being bitten is symbolic of sex, why do you need to show actual sex? In fact, if Dracula's actually having sex with people, then biting them is NOT a metaphor for sex, because he's actually having sex with them. Biting is now separate from that.

Ah I dunno...it's a bad idea in a bad film? That's all I've got.

I say bad film with love though. I've got a soft spot for it even though there's so many things wrong with it, like accent fail from almost everyone.

This is why my favorite kind of vampires are the ones for whom biting IS sex, who are neither capable of nor titillated by regular intercourse. Keeps the metaphor intact.

haha cause it's sexy and fun? I don't know I thought it worked in an overall sexy yet silly yet scary movie. the thing feels like a comic book or "grown up" disney film to me. but then again im just an overall horndog.

That whole book was about sex and the terror the men have of women *having* sex, owning their sex, enjoying sex....

I think the only reason there aren't sex scenes in the book is because it really wasn't done that way then.

Have you read this: http://www.cracked.com/article_19402_6-mind-blowing-ways-zombies-vampires-explain-america.html ? #5 on the list is basically...what you just said. And if you are a fan of Buffy / Angel (the shows), the photo-shopped picture included is pretty freakin hilarious.

No, I hadn't (have now) but most literary analysis of Dracula agree that it's basically a Freudian bucket of "They're here to steal our wimmins." There's actually a few letters that Bram wrote to newspapers, full of dire warnings about how all those wicked immigrants coming to London will bring corruption and disease, etc. It's a pretty popular theory that Dracula was meant as a warning against the dangers of foreign influence and all the depraved sexuality you know foreigners are totally bringing into our culture, etc. Which makes it even more hilarious that popular culture was like "actually, that sounds pretty good."
