Uh, sure. You go ahead and think that.

Aaaaahahahaha this screencap. I cannot help but laugh every time I see it.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I love how Mai's hair falls and her teeny tiny hand, and that weirdass shadow behind them. And Zuko... poor Zuko. I love this awful shot so much, you don't even know. So charming.

Bawwwww.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
lolol those teeth

I just thought of that silly Michael Fassbender is a shark meme for some reason

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think the winner for most awful shot is still this one though.

Wait, you're kidding me, right? That's not an actual screen cap, it's photoshop. Please tell me that it is.

*cheering for the insane noodly flipperness of that gif*

WHY IS AANG SO RIPPED IT'S CREEPY.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I stopped watching it. I'm sorry this is retarded.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:55 am (UTC)(link)

Nope, it's real.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's called an animation smear. It's an intentional strategy to get around limitations showing motion in framerates. There's an entire tumblr devoted to them. http://animationsmears.tumblr.com/

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you look at the actual gif, you can see there are several frames just like it side by side. Not sure I'd call it a smear if it, y'know.... didn't smear.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and that's a standard technique that's been used by animators to portray rapid and comic motion since the 1940s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dover_Boys). Of course multiple frames in the same sequence will use the same effect.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dover Boys employ smears, yes, because it's pose to pose, with the smear translating the movement. (Incidentally I love that cartoon, and I was just about to link a picture to you as an example of smearing, before I realized you'd already done it for me. <3)

I could excuse it as a smear if i'd only seen that one frame. But in the gif, no matter what you grab (because it's a complete running cycle), Aang still looks bizarre, between the expression and the weirdly exaggerated movements, the terrible foreshortening and spreadeagled limbs, and the so-called smears not clearly connecting any movements. How is it a smear if it doesn't smear?

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
A smear can certainly run from multiple frames if the action in question is comic. To my memory (don't have the files with me) that gif runs about twice as long as the actual sequence in question.

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I like this one better

YES THIS WAS AN ACTUAL THING THAT WAS IN THE SHOW

Image

Poor Zuko. He's always getting drawn weird.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)

Suki and Toph also get it pretty bad sometimes.

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I am still convinced that some bored animator was like, "Fuck it. I'm draw up a random frame in flash, pixelate it, and toss it in to see if anyone notices it before it airs."

AND SOMEHOW IT MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE DVD VERSION.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Except that's what a tiny background frame usually looks like when it's zoomed in and I can't for the life of me figure out why people feel entitled to bitch about "poor quality"
It's not SUPPOSED to be viewed up close the original pencil drawing is like a square inch in size, of course it lacks detail.

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice try, but that's not zoomed in. Or rather it's a frame that was zoomed in and BLOWN UP TO FILL THE ENTIRE SCREEN for a split-second.

Yes, it's not SUPPOSED to be viewed up close, but whoever was editing the episode decided to stretch it out for a single, blippy, blink-and-you'll-miss-it frame.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you can really critique individual animation frames out of context from the sequence. Smears, pops, multiples, pans, and zooms have been standard parts of the animator's toolkit since Chuck Jones. Individual frames, if done properly, are not meant to be realistic.

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
One question. Have you seen the scene we're talking about?

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you'd know that it is a critique in context from the sequence. There's a super-zoomed in single frame and then a REALLY OBVIOUS jump out if you know what you're looking for.

I do take back what I said about the random animator since it is a zoomed in version of something else in the scene, but it's still a mistake because the change is so abrupt and I still marvel that no one caught it to the point where it's on the DVD.
