(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 10:01 am (UTC)(link)Where the hell did it come from in Korra? I do not see the lines of descent.
If the animation really is bad, that's just a nail in the coffin.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)I get your point, but that is not the same. More or less, the Avatar world was set in the Tang Dinasty mainly (though the Fire Nation was a bit more "steampunk" than the rest of the nations, and the EK capital was more early Qing to me) or at least their aesthetics were. That corresponds to European Middle-Modern ages.
Making a world shaped like that change with that insane technology jump in just 70 years is like making Queen Victoria succeed King Henry VIII speaking in european terms. I could buy that insane change made in 200 years, but I believe 70 years is not enough for people who rode ostrich-horses one day to be driving Rolls Royces the next.
Speaking in asian terms something "similar" happened in Japan in 1868. I think they tried to play the Meiji Revolution card but failed. Japan at the 1800s and the end of the Bakumatsu have a whole different context than what societies and nations had in the previous Avatar world. The whole crazy change that ravaged Japan at the end of the 19th century was induced by Europe and America. In Korra I fail to see which nation or nations could influence such a change.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)If it bothers you, that's fine, you don't have to watch it. But as a secret said before, there's not a lot of point in debating the historical or scientific realism of a show headlining the reincarnated spirit of the earth, with magic nature karate and nonsensically spliced animals. It's Princess Mononoke, not Ghost in the Shell.
