Light's dad and Aizawa were the best characters IMO. If he lives in the live action movies then I may watch them, because I was interested in seeing his reaction to his son being Kira too.

I personally prefer the movies over the TV series/manga (because I felt the series went downhill after the mid-point, and that's where the movies end, among other reasons), but regardless, it's a really good sequence at the end of the second one where all this comes up.

Seconding the movies > manga. IMO part of it is the pacing, I feel like the movies pacing is a lot better than the manga. I heard somewhere that the author deliberately wanted 108 chapters, and it definitely showed in later parts of the manga IMO.

Plus, the Dad lives. ♥

It's not a messed up reason, anon, to want him to live just to see dah drama. Soichiro is an interesting character-I would have liked to see his reaction too.

Haven't seen the movies yet, but I don't think it's messed up to want to get such a good dramatic payoff. I really wanted him to find out too, and was disappointed that he never did.

I agree with both reasons. Once he died, there weren't a whole lot of major characters left to root for. And him finding out who Kira was would have been amazing.

I might've enjoyed seeing that, but ultimately I am happy Soichiro died thinking his son was innocent.

Why? It would be pointless to let Soichiro's last thoughts knowing that Light was Kira. It's already kicking someone who was already down. I mean, it showed that Light wasn't a complete monster because he still loved his family although he had twisted notions of killing them of they got in the way and it was absolutely neccesary. Unless Soichiro was going to live (and the guy was destined to die in that firefight anyway since he only had the eyes for like what? 6 hours? And it was only suppose to halve your lifespan? Besides Matsuda is already playing the part of realizing not everything is straight black and white and Soichiro was supposed to be a paragon of good and "right", which was why Matsuda admired him.

Plus, I hated the movies because I think it simplified the morals of the series (and I didn't think the writing was great, but YMMV). But then again, I never really liked L and prefer Near and Mello more so....

Him dying thinking he has proof that Light's not Kira is kind of beautiful, though. There are so many varieties of deaths through the story: those who know Light's Kira, those who go unknowingly under his influence, those who sacrifice themselves, etc. This one's a unique variety, and the fact that it's Light's own father is deeply ironic, and granting Light's father that peace in death is quite a bittersweet variation on all the deaths. I loved that, myself.

The 'darker reason' is exactly why I prefer the movies over the manga/anime. It's the risk of discovery and the ultimate reactions of those closest to any 'villian' (Light, Dexter, etc) that interests me way more than the horrific acts they perform. Light's final movie scene was a big win in my books. I'm also a big fan of the way L dies in the movies. There's so much more closure in the movies than I ever felt with the series.
