To be honest, I was comfortable with the change - they figured it was time for Rick to finally make a decisive move, because they spent all this time setting him and Shane up as foils in a way that they really weren't in the comic. At least Carl got to shoot the zombie version (though Carl's significantly different in the show, too. He's kind of a little shit and it probably won't get any better now that Shane's dead because even with all his problems, he seemed to be the only one willing to actually talk to the kid like a parent would)
