Eh, I liked the way it was handled. It was a big turning point for Rick (which he needed because the back and forth with him and Shane was getting boring) and I can still see change on the horizon for Carl because he now has a gun and he did shoot zombie Shane.

But honestly I hate "BUT IT'S NOT LIKE THE BOOK" complaints in general, this is not specifically about you OP but I get tired of that complaint mainly because it's really BORING when a movie/tv/whathaveyou adaptation is exactly like the source material. When it is you know exactly what will happen every second and there's really no reason to watch that movie or tv show, I don't really need tv to show me what I've already seen in my mind from reading.

Adaptations should certainly keep the spirit of their source material, but changes are going to happen.
