The other sexual orientations involve gender in some way.

Demisexuality makes literally no mention of it. People who are demisexual may still fall under one of the other categories of sexual orientation. A person who is exclusively attracted to people of the same gender with whom they share an emotional connection would be both a demisexual and a homosexual.

Since demisexuality overlaps the other categories and doesn't follow the same criteria that the other categories do, it does not, strictly speaking, fit as a classification of orientation.

This, however, doesn't mean that it's not useful in discussions of sexual attraction. Not everything about sexual attraction is or should be tied up in sexual orientation. We need more words to talk about attraction as separate from orientation annyway.

That seems entirely sensible.

Thank you!

This is a very clear and logical explanation. Plus it also explains why people who say "my sexual orientation is Slasher" make me go WTF!?

I like the way you explain this, particularly the idea of separating attraction from orientation. This leaves room for things like people having non-sexual or not-particularly-sexual "crushes" on people who fall outside of their orientation, or people who are asexual having a romantic preference for one gender over the other.

Inventing separate orientations for every iteration of human sexual behavior strikes me as overcomplicated and unnecessary. It's reducing very complex, layered behavior down to simplified terms that will never completely cover every nuance even if we have a thousand of them. Explaining complex ideas are what complete sentences are for. (Anyway, if the goal is to make communication easier, it really doesn't help when new term is invented but never popularized and people say "I'm blahblah-sexual" like that's supposed to explain everything and everyone else is standing there, thinking, "WTF does that mean?")
