Overly-rabid fans have existed long before Twitter, but I think that the service allows them to parade that around in front of the objects of their obsession in a huge, yet very impersonal way, and that has a huge effect on how the creators see fandom. Some celebrities, such as Rihanna, have even replied to their haters on Twitter, showing more of the flawed, human side of them than what we saw from celebrities before. A carefully constructed image is even harder to maintain nowadays.
