Fandom stereotypes everybody, sure. But there's definitely more poisonous loathing when it comes to female characters.

It depends what you mean by "poisonous."

Women are much, much more often bashed and hated in the fandom, but these people have problems with female characters, not with the gender as a whole. Maybe I'm just living under a rock, but I've never seen or heard of that same nasty anti-female behaviour being carried over into real life. I can't say the same for the guy stereotypes, though (particular gay men). Well, truthfully it's not really man-hate because the two people I'm currently thinking of don't dislike men--they just have really, really warped and unrealistic thoughts about what men should be like and do, etc. and it really does affect the way they interact with people. So I'd say that the second is more "poisonous" because of its tendency to spill over into real life.

Of course, that's really not what your secret was about, was it? =D;; Just for the record I do agree with it, because you're, well, you're probably a complete idiot if you see the million pictures on DA of Sakura-bashing and still think, "I love fandom! It isn't biased against females in any way at all." (People really think that? D=)

I haven't seen much of the warped attitudes about males that you're talking about, although from my limited experience with rabid yaoi fandom, I can see how it'd happen. Ouch.

I don't think that everyone in fandom who holds female characters to ridiculous double standards, tosses around phrases like "whore" and "slut," and insists that only "badass" masculine women are strong is going around doing the same thing to real women. However, I do think that taking that attitude towards fictional females bodes ill for their perceptions of real women in the long run and contributes to the pervasive current of misogyny that snakes through our society. :/

But yeah, I agree that fandom has issues with gender in general. I just think that its issues with men are more...specialized, if you will.
