(Anonymous) 2012-03-30 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)I agree with a lot of this, but the crew did have a lot of issues with her. Some of them tried to go out of their way to help her because they felt bad for her, but Mal, Zoe, Jayne, and even Wash weren't entirely positive-towards her. That was what Objects in Space was all about.
One of the big things about a Sue is that she's supposed to have flaws but everyone acts like she doesn't. In Firefly, she's super-human in some ways but no one sees it that way. They see her as a danger, a weapon in some ways. She's psychic but they think she's crazy. She's intelligent but they find her annoying. No one treats her like a goddess. She might be more skilled but the one who is unanimously loved (even by Jayne in his own way) is actually Kaylee. So I don't see her as a Sue, really. I see her as a strange, misplaced character. I think Whedon wanted to do a lot more with her but didn't have the chance and it's a shame.
But you do have a lot of good points. I'd read your essay if you wrote it up.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)It's interesting you mention Kaylee. Everyone does love Kaylee, and I wonder if that's one of the reasons I've never really cared for her all that much. :( I don't hate her, but of all the Firefly characters, she's the one I care least about.

I agree. I don't hate River, and I've never quite called her a Sue, but I think she's hands down the most uninteresting character in the series (followed only by Simon). They're okay in small doses, but in my opinion, they should have been a "story arc" for the main crew to encounter, and after hanging out for a few episodes (5-7, i.e. well within the TV series we got), they should have left. I suppose I could've been happy with the events in the movie being the season one finale, and then them leaving for the main crew to go on and pick up new passengers and get into more trouble later. But I didn't like that River was some sort of lynch pin and so magical super duper powerful. If we had to keep her on the ship as a main character, I would've rather seen her be a traumatized kid who gets better because she's got an amazing, supportive family now and not because she has super secret asskicking powers buried in her subconscious, blah blah blah.
But yeah. Everyone loves and froths over River, but there are a few of us out there who think the original crew at the heart and soul and don't care for the Tams.
