Bingo, anon. I haven't seen the film but O.M.F.G. WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE GALE?

PS Have my babies Gale

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
He didn't have a lot of character development in this movie, but his actor was cute as hell.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
His brother has ruined me. All I saw was Thor's little brother haha

Ditto. Though it didn't bother me, because, hello, pretty.

CAN WE SHARE GALE

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I want to know. I'm horrible and I prefer him to Peeta, possibly because I had a couple of friends like Gale when I was 14.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Because he has shades of Nice Guy who feels entitles to Katniss's affection since he loves her and he was friends with her first.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
His entitlement and the way he seems to think him loving her is benevolent or something pisses me off. And I actually enjoy the rest of his character. Just not the part that feels like Katniss should love him back because he was there first and he's done all this for her and her family etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Both Gale and Peeta have shades of Nice Guy.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Peeta does at the end of THG, but then in the beginning of Catching Fire, he admits that he was wrong to have expectations from her and says he just wants to work on being friends with her. So yeah, I think he does have some Nice Guy entitlement at the very end of THG, but he gets over it pretty fast and admits that he's wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
He never felt entitled to her affection. He was honest, said he loved her, and waited for her to give a response. She never did, just kept stringing him along. She basically said "I can't because the Capitol would kill me"--what does that tell him? She WANTS to, it's just not in her power. So Gale figures, once they're out of the Capitol's reach, they can be together. But then in Mockingjay, in D13, she strung him along again. Didn't tell him not to kiss her, she even kissed him back.

I don't see that as entitlement. He just wanted to know where he stood with her and she never gave him an answer.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, dude, he spent the ENTIRETY of the second book being furious with her and not talking to her because she had the ~audacity~ to use being physically and romantically affectionate with Peeta as a survival strategy. And then continued to occasionally pull tantrums because she would kiss Peeta but not him, or continue to act like she was in love with Peeta in public. If that's not emotional blackmail, I don't know what is.

This. I like Gale good and fine(hell, I like everyone, ftmp), but one of his flaws is that he does use emotional manipulation. I'm very familiar with it IRL, so I thought it was obvious in the books. Of course, Peeta did that a little too, in various places, but I think it was never as pronounced or as frequent as Gale.

[identity profile] theoriginal-ist.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. I love Gale. I love all the characters. But I definitely felt like Gale was a little more emotionally manipulative of her then not. Even though I could understand him getting confused, especially when she kissed him in CF. But I don't know. I thought she worked better with Peeta but I still love Gale.

[identity profile] tari-silmarwen.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh thank you, I thought I was the only one who got Nice Guy vibes off him.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because he's an extremist, has no problem with innocent people being tortured, supports genocide, oh and also has a generally unpleasant personality?

Well, that's from the books. I didn't have an opinion of him in the first book (he was hardly even there), but I hated him in the movie because when it showed him watching the Games as they were taking place, it was all him being jealous of Katniss and Peeta's "romance." And this while there was still the chance that he might not see either of them alive ever again. Way to have your priorities, Gale!

"when it showed him watching the Games as they were taking place, it was all him being jealous of Katniss and Peeta's "romance." And this while there was still the chance that he might not see either of them alive ever again. Way to have your priorities, Gale!"

That's exactly what I thought when watching the movie. They could have at least shown him -idk- being worried when Katniss had problems or was suffering instead of just being jealous.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
People hate Gale? Why? I mean, I guess I can see why people wouldn't like him in book 3, but I don't remember him doing anything too unsympathetic in the first 2 books.

For the record, he was one of my favorites... yes, even after the events of the third book.

Granted, I haven't watched the movie yet, so I have no idea if movie!Gale is the same as book!Gale.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Two words: Silver parachutes. I was ambivalent on him until that point.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? It clearly said in the book that, although he designed them, he had no knowledge of their use on children, and certainly not on Coin's plan to use them for their OWN children. I very much doubt that he ever would have condoned his own younger siblings possibly dying in order to get rid of a handful of Capitol first responders.

[identity profile] lirren.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
They weren't rebel children, they were Capitol children. Snow specifically says "...there was no reason for me to destroy a pen full of Capitol children." The only rebels they killed were the handful of medics who were trying to help the children.

[identity profile] tari-silmarwen.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I never hated Gale but I never really liked him much either. For me he was mostly just kind of... there. He didn't really have enough impact as a character for me to have any strong emotions about him whatsoever. I didn't find him interesting enough to really care about. And he had very little pagetime so we didn't really get to spend all that much time with him. Up until Mockingjay. I was actually expecting to start really liking Gale in Mockingjay, once he had more things to do and was more involved in the plot and we actually got to know him as a character.

Of course, once we did get to know him he turned out to be not very likeable. Bummer.
