I worry about getting into fandom, because while I enjoy Katniss/Peeta, I identify personally with Gale the most(out of all the characters, tbh), and I just feel really sad about his circumstances. But I can't exactly tell people that, because I'm supposed to be a shipper, and we all hate Gale, don't you know.

Yay, hypocrisy.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the film and admit to not having read the books. That being said, I actually REALLY despised Peeta. He was pretty much the least sympathetic character in the movie, he whined about how he was going to lose (and die) and then, after helping the bad guys hunt Katniss down, it was all a-okay and they had hot hot makeouts in a cafe with a leg wound. And stuff.

I don't understand why the shipping is so important to people.

Yes, I realize I just said this in a community devoted to fandom. But no, I still don't get it. The shipping (either way) was the least interesting thing about it to me.

Film =/= Books.

They've completely marketed the film to play up the love-triangle aspect. And downplay everything else, imo. So I'm not surprised it's all Team... whatever and complaints about how there wasn't enough making out. (There wasn't enough ANYTHING in the entire film imho but i digress).

But I still stand by my assertion that in the books, the main focus (for me) was not a love story. Never was, never ended up being. I don't really care for all the romance. But I still do believe that it is inherently different than Twilight, even in THG's film version. The lovestory was not a massive focus, whereas I don't think in Twilight it ever WASN'T a focus. It was always about Bella and her creeps, which one is better, which one does she love, how she shouldn't love him but she does, which one loves her more, etc etc. I think THG film pretty much just showed us what the Capitol people saw when they watched it in the books, so of course they're going to play up the romance; they did it in the books for the audience as well! I think it's quite clever. We'll have to see where they take it later tho -- if they choose to really dwell on the Gale/Katniss/Peeta stuff or not. I mean, it had it's place and time in the book and it's not that I didn't see it at all, I just didn't consider it the major focus, except on the brief occasions when it became a blunt, tangible issue for Katniss herself.

But I do agree that there seem to be a large percentage of hypocritical fangirls as well...

There's also the fact that if you read books 2 and 3, the ping-ponging between both of them being [alternately] the better choice for Katniss gets a little insane. So I wonder how much of it is Team Peeta fans who have read the entire series vs. those who haven't...

[identity profile] chocorate.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I could do without the making out tbh. Their chemistry in the movie was weak a hell.

As a Katniss/Peeta shipper, I don't get why people hate Gale. The series is over. Everyone knows who Katniss ends up with. Why hate someone who isn't even your competition? Especially when he's so gorge and actually has a complicated story.

[identity profile] okapifeathers.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
when i read the books i preferred gale but i don't really care that katniss has a love interest. now i'm kind of indifferent, like "oh it's just a part of a book". nothing to get riled up about in my mind.

my favorite character is johanna anyway.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
YMMV, but not the fandom circles I've been hanging around. Nobody is all that invested in Katpee of the people I've met, and I've never seen any 'real' HGs shipping wars in my fandom time on LJ. Even my midnight audience was really respectful (albeit a little older, it looked like) and the only part they seemed to find silly was the love triangle. Overall I think it depends on where you look. Older fans might also be more your style (though not always, of course). Not everybody is silly about the love triangle~~~, though.

This isn't reassuring about the fandom. I haven't seen the movie yet i read the books but I Just Dont Care about either Peeta or Gale as anything other than plot devices?

I'm concerned I'm the only one who's all "yeah man, kick ass and survive Katniss! oh yeah, save those guys but whatevs KATNISS"

peetas fandom is probably so big because usually it's the badass one that wins. it rarely is the nice dependable one and so the people who like that are just liking this guy instead of being split between a dozen guys in a dozen books

i think katniss should marry a lady.

The boys in this story barely registered with me. It's all about Katniss and the rebellion.

I still can't wrap my mind around how people could read/watch The Hunger Games and come out of it angry about shipping. With the actual games and the rebellion in the next two books,

I really just don't like Gale because it rang too much of the Edward/Bella/Jacob with him in it. He was a very undeveloped character (until the third book, where he became somewhat vile but at least complex and relevant) who really seemed to only exist to add almost completely unnecessary romantic tension to the Katniss/Peeta subplot. I don't hate him so much as a character, I just hated how blatantly nonsensical it was in the books for, in a scene where they're in a situation where people are trying to kill them, and Peeta is dying, for Katniss to suddenly start thinking "But I might love Gale!" It just felt really forced.

I fully confess, I prefer Peeta to Gale most of the time. And I admit wishing we'd gotten more of the cave scene, but, then again, I wish we could have gotten more of EVERYTHING (Like, at least ~30 more minutes of material. But I digress). But I don't get why some people hate him, just like I don't get why some people hate Peeta. He(Gale) has got one of the most interesting characterizations in the books(outside of the triangle stuff, which, to me, just felt weird and ooc for Gale and Katniss, but, again, digression).
I honestly don't like the triangle, because I didn't read the books for the romance, I read them for the story and the social connotations. Well, and the badass female lead who can shoot a bow.

[identity profile] bamboo.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Uuuuugh, this.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of funny you brought this up, cause uh.. even though I'm not part of the fandom, I've read 'The Hunger Games' books, and even though I found the premise of the books interesting, like fifty pages into the second book, I was already so disgustingly fucking tired of Gale and Peeta, Peeta and Gale, OMG ANGST WHO AM I GOING TO CHOOSE AND OH YEAH THEN OF COURSE THERE'S THE WORLD TO SAVE, BUT FIRST I HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THIS PEETA AND GALE THING, that I almost stopped fucking reading them. The love triangle bullshit was so cliche and overdone that I just completely lost interest.

Yeah, tl;dr, I got so tired of hearing about Peeta and Gale, like. Fuck. I just didn't care anymore. Like, come on. If I was dealing, at sixteen, with having to protect the population of an entire planet from being destroyed (my own family included), the LAST thing I would be angsting about is which ~totally dreamy~ cute boi I'm going to pick over the other.

[identity profile] rapunzelita.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I love The Hunger Games, and, to be honest, I do not give a flying fuck about the romance. I love all three characters, but... I just wish the author had just had the metaphorical balls of pulling off a celibate hero. "Sorry, but I'm really not interested in romance, kthxbai"

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the books yet and I only saw like one of the trailers, so I dunno about the marketed or the writing, but I didn't think the romance between Katniss and Peeta seemed genuine at all. At least not on her end. As for why everyone hates movieverse Gale, I have no idea. His entire character is very undeveloped. If I had to guess before the scene where he was watching Katniss and Peeta kissing, I would have figured him as her best friend and nothing more.

I'm sure it's not like that in the books, but from just the movie, it really doesn't appear that Katniss has any real romantic feelings for either of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
see, i like snow more than i like gale - but in my defence op that's not because of shipping, it's because i really like snow as a character.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so disappointed that Katniss didn't just tell them both to basically fuck off at the end of Mockingjay and we got that crappy epilogue instead.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVED that the 3 day long make out session was condensed to 1 kiss on screen. It gave me hope that this movie franchise won't fuck up and put all its emphasis on the love triangle because frankly, I didn't care much for it in the books. It just about made me quit reading the second book. The premise is so ridiculously stupid. "You better be in love or else!" Although, I admit it isn't as bad as some love triangles out there (ahem Twilight).

Basically, I liked that the movie put more emphasis on the dystopia aspect of the story rather than draw out the love triangle. I just hope it doesn't get out of hand in the next movie.
