I saw the film and admit to not having read the books. That being said, I actually REALLY despised Peeta. He was pretty much the least sympathetic character in the movie, he whined about how he was going to lose (and die) and then, after helping the bad guys hunt Katniss down, it was all a-okay and they had hot hot makeouts in a cafe with a leg wound. And stuff.

At least in the book there was more acknowledging and explaining that he helped the Careers to protect Katniss. When I first saw the movie, it confused the hell out of me why he went from having a crush on her to helping hunt her down to back to having a crush. They didn't explain why he was with the Careers well enough, to me, and that's one of my biggest peeves with the movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
DA Yeah, I thought the movie rushed the Games portion of it a bit too much to the point of not really explaining a lot of what was going on. I've read the books, but I think I would've been a little lost with connecting Haymitch to sponsors and parachutes; Peeta's role in the Games and the bond between Katniss and Rue. The movie I felt her sadness was because she was so young, not so much that she reminded her of Prim and how she felt about her time with her in the Games. It really felt like a companion to the books rather than an adaption.

he was trying to keep them away from her. did that point not come across in the movie? i have not seen it yet so..

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
No. The movie missed a lot, IMO

[identity profile] steph313.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I felt it did. Yeah, Peeta just shows up with the Careers and the viewer is sort of "wtf?" (but then again, so is Katniss), but after the whole Tracker Jacker scene happened and the Careers run to the lake to escape, Peeta does return to tell Katniss to run. It's very similar to what happened in the book where after Katniss escapes them, she stops to think, "Did Peeta just save me?" and starts to question his whether she was wrong about him betraying her. They just don't give us a scene of her hashing that out.

Not to mention there was a definite instance where the Careers were yelling up at Katniss after trapping her up the tree-- taunting her and letting her know she's all but dead--and the camera deliberately cuts to Peeta standing behind them all, silently starting up at Katniss.

I think the point was supposed to be that he was pretending to help them hunt Katniss and actually misdirecting them. It's clearer in the book. He convinces them "let's give up looking for her tonight" and the like repeatedly before outright saving her during the wasp nest thing.

He was always protecting her.

That said I didn't like him all that much either.

But I don't count that against the author and screenwriters because I don't think you're actually supposed to like him. I think part of the point of his character is that the unassuming, not-spectacular dude may be the most loving/steadfast/caring in the end. I thought he was intentionally unexciting and was supposed to be a counterpoint to Gale who is "sexier"/"edgier"/more exciting.

I didn't think any of the characters were supposed to be exactly likeable. *shrugs* I enjoyed the story, and I liked Katniss's storyline, but tbh as a character I don't like her very much. I feel sorry for Peeta, and I empathize the most with Gale, personality-wise. But other than that, I wasn't too into the characters themselves.

I found Katniss very likable, but you're right -- if she is likable, she's likable in spite of herself.

(And confession time: I have not yet read books 2 and 3, and I hear the way her character develops is a controversial thing. So I don't know if I'd feel the same after reading them, because I haven't yet.)

Well, a lot of how I feel about her was because of the last two. I liked her immensely after THG, but my affection changed once I read CF and MJ. I empathized with her less(which is hilarious, considering the things she goes through), and I just really felt like her story, while human and relatable, made her unrelatable to me personally.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think I like her MORE because of her many and varied character flaws, especially the ones that become apparent in the latter two books. This is for a couple of different reasons: one is because it's really, really refreshing to see a lead character (and particularly a female lead character) who isn't special, amazing, and perfect in every single way, apart from maybe having one flaw that ultimately makes her more endearing (i.e. "Oh, gosh, I'm just so ~adorably~ oblivious!"). These are real ad serious flaws, and were not exploited for maybe one chapter in the book before she went back to being perfect. These were significant and pervasive flaws that persisted throughout the series and caused her a lot of grief. Secondly, I find I relate a lot to Katniss because, though we don't have a similar personality, we have a lot of the same flaws: we are both extremely distrustful, and suspicious, and stubborn, and hotheaded. This, to me, makes her a thousand times more relatable than ANY character that I share good personality traits with. Thirdly, I liked that the author stayed consistent with these flaws and never tried to apologize for them. She accepted and did a good job of explaining that her character has flaws, just like any human, and does not try to diminish them or explain them away by making excuses for her behavior, like "YES, KATNISS IS MEAN, BUT IT'S ONLY BECAUSE SHE __________! IT'S NOT HER FAULT!". She placed the blame for Katniss' behavior squarely on Katniss, and I really like that.

Plus, it's very hard to write a character as unlikable as Katniss is and still have her be a loved and supported protagonist with a huge cult following, in my opinion.

THIS. Exactly. THIS is why I think the books were so good. This is what I think the focus was. All this. This is why I empathize with her. Yes, she was broken and had flaws, but at least she had them. Society is so obsessed with giving us one of two kinds of women; the objectified stereotype that needs men to rescue her, has no agency, and does nothing, OR the woman who takes no shit, is kickass on her own, and never ever shows weakness or admits to being wrong. Katniss is so different from either of those, because she's human and flawed. That will forever be the saving grace of the story, amidst the triangle shit, imho.

Even if, for personal reasons, I'm terrified of how similar we are because I'm terrified of undergoing a mental breakdown.

I agree that it's probably intended and you're not supposed to really like him in the movies. I guess they were trying to go for that the audience should feel how Katniss feels. She was wary of his actions too and didn't know what his game was. And the audience is probably all supposed to be like, "Are you crazy?? Gale is so much better for you!"

oh man, this is me. at least, I never read the books but saw the movie and was actually cracking up over what a freaking creeper douche Peeta was. Like, when he was all "I WATCHED YOU GO HOME EVERY DAY, KATNISS" I leaned over to my brother and whispered "EeeEeeeEverryyy DAAaaaaayyyyy~"

so YANA

*snicker* there was more than one person in the theater (my friends included) that went "Stalker!" at that part.

Were you in the same theater as I was? That totally happened in mine, too.

Yeah, you.. really need to read the books. Your impression of what Peeta did in the movies is not at all what he did in the books.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the movie Peeta was intended. I think you're supposed to be turned off by him and sometimes think he's not too bad. The same way Katniss feels about him in the book.
