At least in the book there was more acknowledging and explaining that he helped the Careers to protect Katniss. When I first saw the movie, it confused the hell out of me why he went from having a crush on her to helping hunt her down to back to having a crush. They didn't explain why he was with the Careers well enough, to me, and that's one of my biggest peeves with the movie.

DA Yeah, I thought the movie rushed the Games portion of it a bit too much to the point of not really explaining a lot of what was going on. I've read the books, but I think I would've been a little lost with connecting Haymitch to sponsors and parachutes; Peeta's role in the Games and the bond between Katniss and Rue. The movie I felt her sadness was because she was so young, not so much that she reminded her of Prim and how she felt about her time with her in the Games. It really felt like a companion to the books rather than an adaption.
