I don't understand why the shipping is so important to people.

Yes, I realize I just said this in a community devoted to fandom. But no, I still don't get it. The shipping (either way) was the least interesting thing about it to me.

I think it's because, well.. first of all, the series was a teen/young adult series, so naturally, it's going to draw the type and age of audience that's into that sort of thing. Also, since Stephanie Meyer talked about the books so much, obviously all the die-hard Twilight fans were going to go buy it, too, and since that was all they wanted out of Twilight, that was probably, naturally, going to be what they look for in 'The Hunger Games'. And, I mean, let's face it: though THG had a very interesting dystopian premise, at the end of the day, the large majority of the books were about Katniss' struggle with whether to choose Peeta or Gale (which, to me, became boring and tedious very, very quickly).
