Film =/= Books.

They've completely marketed the film to play up the love-triangle aspect. And downplay everything else, imo. So I'm not surprised it's all Team... whatever and complaints about how there wasn't enough making out. (There wasn't enough ANYTHING in the entire film imho but i digress).

But I still stand by my assertion that in the books, the main focus (for me) was not a love story. Never was, never ended up being. I don't really care for all the romance. But I still do believe that it is inherently different than Twilight, even in THG's film version. The lovestory was not a massive focus, whereas I don't think in Twilight it ever WASN'T a focus. It was always about Bella and her creeps, which one is better, which one does she love, how she shouldn't love him but she does, which one loves her more, etc etc. I think THG film pretty much just showed us what the Capitol people saw when they watched it in the books, so of course they're going to play up the romance; they did it in the books for the audience as well! I think it's quite clever. We'll have to see where they take it later tho -- if they choose to really dwell on the Gale/Katniss/Peeta stuff or not. I mean, it had it's place and time in the book and it's not that I didn't see it at all, I just didn't consider it the major focus, except on the brief occasions when it became a blunt, tangible issue for Katniss herself.

But I do agree that there seem to be a large percentage of hypocritical fangirls as well...

Agreed.

TBH though, I think a lot of the loudest fangirls are just the immature Twilight generation or kids who've been convinced that everything always and forever is about lurv and ~romance.

100% agree. I think a lot of the Team Peeta/Gale fangirling was just done on the behalf of fucking stupid Twilight fans who needed a new love triangle to latch onto because Twilight is going to be over soon and then we'll never hear about it again.

inb4 Stephanie Meyer writes a very similar book to 'The Hunger Games' series with a new love triangle that we now have to watch unfold over the course of ten years, four books, and five movies.

oooh, I like you anon. You described what I took from the books perfectly

The films were definitely marketed to play up the love-triangle and Team X. I agree with that. Except the actual movie down played the romance. The parts that were in the movie were how they were laid out in the book and some even held back (Katniss/Peeta in the cave). I'm all about the dystopia plot too. I find it more interesting and I don't care about the love triangle. In fact, I tell people that I loved the first 80% of THG book, but after Katniss found Peeta in the games it went downhill for me. I'm struggling through the second book because I can't take all the stupid "pretend we're in love" plot and have been told it gets better, so I'm sticking with it. Anyways, I don't think the entire movie was from the Capitol's POV, but there were sections of it that did well with exposition and really show what it looks like to them vs. how Katniss feels about it. I think the mix between the two were reasonably balanced. As much as there are thinks I don't like about the movies (I hate the pacing...) there were some clever subtle things they did to. But I do feel like they kept the majority of the focus on the Games. Honestly, if I was into shipping and hadn't read the books I would probably be disappointed in the movie about it's utter lack of romance.
