Wasn't Katniss whitewashed? I imagine that's what they're upset about?

Apparently all the book says is that she has an olive complexion. I agree that the actress they got doesn't exactly fit the description from that book, but her race isn't ever explicitly stated is it? Personally, I'm kind of upset that people think that white people can't be olive-skinned. Lots of white people have medium complexions and white people aren't all pale/pinkish. My mother has a naturally olive complexion (I guess that's why people are always thinking she is Puerto Rican or Native American or whatever, but no, she's white...)

On the other hand, if she was played by an actress who wasn't white, I don't see a problem with that.

Like I say below, I'm of Mediterranean descent, and I grew up with people calling my complexion "olive." So I've always thought it meant "white person who isn't fair," not "person of color."

So I don't know. I guess to me it depends on the author's intent. Or on whether the meaning I'm familiar with of the term "olive skin" is a regional anomaly and it actually refers to people who aren't white often enough that the people I know just use the term wrong.

The interesting thing is that pretty much anyone of any race could potentially have an "olive complexion". Maybe the author wrote it that way so that anyone reading the book could say "Katniss looks like me!" which is pretty neat if you think about it.

THIS.

Katniss could easily be a darker-skinned white person. I don't think that's what people are upset about.

The audition allowed only white actresses, though. Katniss' description didn't rule out her being white, but it didn't necessitate her being white, either. Nobody else even got a chance to try (and actors of color finding comparably good work to the roles their white counterparts get seems to be a problem, from what I've heard), so. Yeah, fuck that.

No. She is described in the book as olive skinned but also pale and white as she is recovering from her injuries in the hospital in the third book.

There are pale olive skinned white people out there. You can find them all along the Mediterranean For example, my mother's family is of Spanish heritage and olive skinned. And they have been mistaken for Southern French, Italian, Greek and Portuguese. Basically, white people.

Uh, no. She wasn't.
