I think what OP is trying to say is that they were upset there weren't any Hispanics/Latinos in The Hunger Games?

Say what you will, but would it really hurt people to realize that the United States has more than two races/ethnicities and to try to, you know, INCLUDE other minorities in their fiction from time to time? And Hispanics are the largest minority ethnic group in the US

Why exactly?

If this is about Katniss having "olive skin" in the book, I... eh. I dunno. I'm white (of Mediterranean descent on both sides) and I've gown up hearing people call my skin tone "olive." So reading that word doesn't make me think the character is a person of color. I'm used to it meaning "white people who tan easily"/"white people who are darker than the fair ones." So If I'd read that prior to the controversy, I most likely would've thought Katniss looked like me with darker hair.

That said, it sounds (from the controversy) like the author may have intended Katniss not to be white, and if so it is kinda sketch that she was portrayed as white. I'm torn about it though, because District 12 is in Appalachia, and I can kind of see casting someone who looks like what you'd expect someone from that region in the present day to look like.

Though the controversy did give me a brown-skinned Katniss in my headcanon. :-)

Why just the Hunger Games movie? I haven't seen it, but it doesn't seem like a particular beacon ... it seems like Hispanic Americans are not represented as much as they could be just about anywhere.

If it's about Katniss, well, to be truthful, I always pictured Katniss in teh book as definitely Caucasian and sort of "redneck," being from Appalachia and all. But that's my personal experience of Appalachia, an experience at least ten years old. (Okay, my experience of southwestern West Virginia, where my mom and I cheered quietly to each other when we finally saw a black person at the freaking mall in Parkersburg.) And her sister's definitely a little blonde girl. Katniss is just tanned, maybe, from running around in the woods and meadows firing bows into little critters.

No Spanish or Mexicans, eh? What's odd is that half the population of Spain is "white" by all intents and purposes. Fair skin, light hair, blue/green eyes, etc.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
But why this movie specifically? You could say the same thing about most movies coming out.

Kinda bothers me when people don't understand why there are fans who got upset at Katniss casting.
District 12 is located at the Appalachians, so I always supposed they had darker skin, and traits similar to Native Americans, except for a small amount of them (like Prim and Peeta). She describes her skin as olive many times, and if I recall it well, she even compared her skin to Rue's. Besides, she's not the only one who shouldn't have been caucasian. There's also Gale, her dad and the rest of District 12.

(by the way, I think the worst part of that is that they explicitly called for a caucasian girl, and I didn't even thought Jennifer Lawrence's acting was that good to say it's because of talent. In fact, I found it rather cheesy...)

OP: If you aren't trolling I think i can sort of sympathize. If Katniss or if more of the other actors were minorities then I think I would have been more interested in the film.

[identity profile] lady-kinky-chan.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm generic white and I have cousins with my same maternal ethnicity but their father is of Polish/Greek/Southern French descent and is very tan, so two of his children have an olive complexion.

When reading Katniss I just basically pictured my ethnically white/European olive-skinned cousin as her.

Actually my (technically half) sister is always tan. Naturally she's white like me but started tanning religiously as a teenager and she's developed that olive tone as well.

I'm too German-Irish, I don't tan, I just freckle then burn.

So yeah, "olive skinned" reads as person of European/Mediterranean descent to me personally, though I guess I could see the term applied to Hispanics too.

Plus, her last name is "Everdeen" which definitely isn't Spanish and her mother is described as very much white and blonde, so she's at least mostly of European descent I think.

Is this about Katniss and Gale and half of District 12 getting white-washed?

OP, you need to read the books. Race does not exist as a category. There are two types of people in Katniss' district: a majority with black hair, grey eyes, and olive skin and a minority with blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. The only other described group is District 11 where black hair, gold eyes, and dark skin is the majority and at least one person with straight black hair (possibly implying that non-straight is the norm), gold eyes, and olive skin. The author makes it very difficult to guess the racial categories because racial categories don't exist. Descriptions are cursory at best because our concept of race does not play a big factor. Everyone is mixed or as mixed as their districts allow. The gene pool is very small and people have intermarried so much that our ideas of race don't matter.

I'm sorry that the films didn't meet your expectations of a racially divided Panem, but at this point in the books, only three categories are shown: the two in Katniss' district and the majority in District 11. The people in the Capitol are described more by their unnatural colorings than anything else. Katniss' district is in Appalachia. The logical conclusion would be that Hispanic would not be the dominant racial group. I think Jennifer is a little pale for the part, but you also need to consider that her sister and mother are part of the blonde hair, blue eyes minority. To show her as non-white, you would have to either present her dead father extensively or deal with an audience expecting a plot twist to explain the cognitive disonance.

You should probably move the sign out of the way, then, because your missing out on a wonderful series.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think by that point in time where the Hunger Games takes place everyone (aside from in the Capitol because of all the cosmetic surgery they get who knows what they are) is probably a mutt on some level with multiple races in them, so stating someone has "olive skin" really would be no indication of race.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-03 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it never occurred to me that Katniss was anything but whitey mcwhite white while reading the books and I feel that the movie did a pretty good job showing a broad spectrum of races in all places (except District 12, which is maybe a little white even for far future Appalachia).
Like, I'm sorry, but I'm not going to immediately read a pale olive-skinned girl with straight hair and light eyes as non-white, even mixed but non-white. When I think of non-white and non-East-Asian people, I think of people who look a little more, well, like me. Visibly brown, coarser, curlier/wavier hair, dark eyes, etc.
I can appreciate that many non-white people can see themselves in Katniss and I find the interpretation of her as non-white to be perfectly logical, it's just not what I saw, but I'm sick of being called racist because I don't see someone who could easily pass as white as being anything like myself racially.
