Why exactly?

If this is about Katniss having "olive skin" in the book, I... eh. I dunno. I'm white (of Mediterranean descent on both sides) and I've gown up hearing people call my skin tone "olive." So reading that word doesn't make me think the character is a person of color. I'm used to it meaning "white people who tan easily"/"white people who are darker than the fair ones." So If I'd read that prior to the controversy, I most likely would've thought Katniss looked like me with darker hair.

That said, it sounds (from the controversy) like the author may have intended Katniss not to be white, and if so it is kinda sketch that she was portrayed as white. I'm torn about it though, because District 12 is in Appalachia, and I can kind of see casting someone who looks like what you'd expect someone from that region in the present day to look like.

Though the controversy did give me a brown-skinned Katniss in my headcanon. :-)

Yeah; when I read "olive" skin I've always thought of the type of skin tone from around the Mediterranean but still being white. I mean, it might not necessarily be that for everyone, but that's what I've always thought.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, good to hear it's not just me/my family saying things oddly.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not; when I saw some people asking about Katniss being a PoC or being whitewashed I was like "...but she's olive skinned, that doesn't mean she's not white."

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
*nods*

That said, I don't think movie!Katniss looks anything like book!Katniss. I thought the personality matched up well, but the looks? Nope.

So, if (European?) Mediterraneans and their descendants are considered white... then what the hell constitutes "hispanic/latino/whatever the fuck" in the US? @_@ I'm European where we just refer to Spaniards/Italians/etc, so the terms confuse me to start with.

Hispanic et. al. basically means anyone from a country south of the US, on this hemisphere. (Yeah, you could get more nuanced, but that's the general gist.)

People whose ancestry comes from Central or South America (referred to as "Latin America" in the United States) or who are USian (for lack of a better word) but are mestizo/speak Spanish/have some Spanish ancestry = Latinos/Hispanics

Though I think Spanish and Portugese people are also considered "Hispanic" in the US (which is confusing because Portugese people don't speak Spanish, but neither do Brazilians so hey)

It is kind of confusing

I do too... and now I wonder if it's my brain jumping to conclusions and just putting together the complexion and the, well, the trees.

I think what upset people--okay, me--is that in the casting call, it explicitly asked for a Caucasian actor for the role of Katniss.

+1

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that is sketchy and gross.

Oh, I can understand people being upset by that.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Anytime a casting call specifies that I get very annoyed. jfc why? PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. you can't "write" a person of X colour. throw it open to everyone and see who plays Katniss the best.

I'm sure actress is good, but give a lesser knoen actress a try - hopefully increasing the amount of people acting/getting attention

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
you can totally write a character of X color, though. (For example, Rue is explicitly "black". There's no way around it. Peeta is explicitly white. To cast other races in their parts would be to ignore the text entirely.) The problem is that Katniss was ambiguous enough in the books that they didn't really need to insist on a white actress.

Though, you know, I think they went with a white actress because Katniss' mom is white, and her sister is white (both explicitly; they're blonde and blue-eyed), and it's super uncommon for mixed kids to be blonde and blue-eyed. It would take up too much valuable screen time to set up an explanation of why Katniss appears to be a different race from the rest of her family (did they adopt her? Was she abandoned? Is this a red herring for some crazy twist about her parentage later on?)
It's kind of simple really.

Caucasian is not limited to white people. Some Middle Eastern and African and Asian people are classified as Caucasian as well. But why let that stand in your way, I guess.

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
When I read that she had olive skin and that 12 is where Appalachia was, I pictures Katniss being a mix of Italian/Native American with whatever paler European heritage her mother had. Jennifer wasn't my visual match, but I think she's a great actress so I was happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that's the idea or some sort of Hispanic/white mixture. You don't know what race she is. Katniss is almost definitely mixed race as are more of the Seam people. The richer people of 12 have some sort of blond/blue-eyed holdover but there's no prevention against intermarriage between the two groups other than different lifestyles. Jennifer seems way too pale to me, but I think the guy who played Gale was a pretty good choice.

To me, it's even more insulting for people to assume that Panem follows our racial beliefs, when it's pretty obvious most people are of mixed race within their districts.

Pretty much my big problem. People of mixed heritage aren't as big of a deal these days, and I'm sure as hell it's the norm in Panem. I could see the Capitol and some of the richer districts being more distinct, but I see 11 and 12 and being very mixed.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I figured the same, especially since Prim is described as so typically caucasian, them being full siblings would kind of discount Katniss being a PoC. Or so I thought.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
This actually disappointed me a lot. Why couldn't they have all been racially ambiguous? Would that have been so terrible?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
I never got the "olive" thing, and I can't say I understand it after googling. Green? Why olive?

[identity profile] theoriginal-ist.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
My mom is considered to have "olive" skin with brown hair and green eyes but she's French/Irish/English. I just always took it as having a naturally tan complexion. I'm paler than her so I'm considered "fair" like my father. When I read about Katniss I just pictured my mom with my color eyes.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that is what I pictured when I hear olive-skinned, although that might be because I, like you, am a white Mediterranean person. The problem isn't that a white person can't be olive-skinned, it's that it would have been a great opportunity to cast a non-white person, and I can see why people are upset that they cast a blonde white girl.
