Yeah; when I read "olive" skin I've always thought of the type of skin tone from around the Mediterranean but still being white. I mean, it might not necessarily be that for everyone, but that's what I've always thought.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, good to hear it's not just me/my family saying things oddly.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not; when I saw some people asking about Katniss being a PoC or being whitewashed I was like "...but she's olive skinned, that doesn't mean she's not white."

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
*nods*

That said, I don't think movie!Katniss looks anything like book!Katniss. I thought the personality matched up well, but the looks? Nope.

Personally, there are some Italian families in coal mining areas of PA, WV, KY, so I always imagined Katniss had some Italian blood in her. Hence the light eyes, olive skin, dark hair.

I imagined a Greek or Italian-looking Katniss when I was reading the books, but I wouldn't have balked at a partially Hispanic/Middle Eastern/Indian Katniss either.

I'm really happy with Jennifer Lawrence and her performance, but ITA that the casting call should have been open to non-Caucasians too.

Caucasian and white are not interchangeable words - and caucasians actually cover a broad range of skin tones.

Caucasian and white are not interchangeable words

What the fuck is a "Caucasian" anyway
I mean besides the literal definition

[identity profile] solo-by-choice.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't quote me, but I think it refers to a particular area of eastern Europe because of the Caucasia mountain range or something...

Google found this map: http://www.hunmagyar.org/turan/caucasus/index.html

I think the lesson here is that all the words we use to distinguish race are stupid because race is stupid.

[identity profile] tonicat.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it used to refer to people from all over Europe, parts of Africa and Asia. Now it's used interchangeably with European.

[identity profile] solo-by-choice.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. I just thought they wanted to know where the word came from, which, you've got to admit, is wonderfully nonsensical.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
So, if (European?) Mediterraneans and their descendants are considered white... then what the hell constitutes "hispanic/latino/whatever the fuck" in the US? @_@ I'm European where we just refer to Spaniards/Italians/etc, so the terms confuse me to start with.

Hispanic et. al. basically means anyone from a country south of the US, on this hemisphere. (Yeah, you could get more nuanced, but that's the general gist.)

People whose ancestry comes from Central or South America (referred to as "Latin America" in the United States) or who are USian (for lack of a better word) but are mestizo/speak Spanish/have some Spanish ancestry = Latinos/Hispanics

Though I think Spanish and Portugese people are also considered "Hispanic" in the US (which is confusing because Portugese people don't speak Spanish, but neither do Brazilians so hey)

It is kind of confusing

Though I think Spanish and Portugese people are also considered "Hispanic" in the US

You should not use this term with Spaniards and Portuguese. Although they are hispanophones, many take offense to the term.

I don't, and I don't usually consider Spaniards "Hispanic" (even though they speak Spanish), I'm just saying that those groups of people often get described as such in the United States for whatever reason

Anyway the conversation about who or who isn't considered "Hispanic" or whether or not Hispanic or Latino is the correct term or if neither term is correct, if you have to speak Spanish to be considered Hispanic, etc. could go on forever and ever so let's just drop it

when I read "olive" skin I've always thought of the type of skin tone from around the Mediterranean

I do too... and now I wonder if it's my brain jumping to conclusions and just putting together the complexion and the, well, the trees.
