Kinda bothers me when people don't understand why there are fans who got upset at Katniss casting.
District 12 is located at the Appalachians, so I always supposed they had darker skin, and traits similar to Native Americans, except for a small amount of them (like Prim and Peeta). She describes her skin as olive many times, and if I recall it well, she even compared her skin to Rue's. Besides, she's not the only one who shouldn't have been caucasian. There's also Gale, her dad and the rest of District 12.

(by the way, I think the worst part of that is that they explicitly called for a caucasian girl, and I didn't even thought Jennifer Lawrence's acting was that good to say it's because of talent. In fact, I found it rather cheesy...)

Or any idea of the history of Appalachia. Most of the settlers were Scots-Irish, and today only a small percentage of the people who live there are Native American.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that Jennifer Lawrence does not have black hair, olive skin, or grey eyes, despite the fact that Katniss is described as having those traits many times.

Why would Prim be whiter than her sister, though?

Because sometimes that's how genetics works? Prim obviously took after her mother, whereas Katniss took after her father. Just because one parent has darker skin doesn't mean all of his or her children will have the same skin tone.

My sister is blond with blue eyes and a skin way fairer than mine, and I have dark brown hair and eyes. Same biological parents, so I guess it just happens.

It happens. My mom has olive skin, brown hair, and green eyes. My dad has brown hair, brown eyes, and fair skin but his mother had blonde hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. My brother has brown hair, brown eyes, and olive skin. I have golden blonde/brown hair, fair-to-pale skin, and blue-grey eyes. I took more after the French side of our family and my brother took more after the Irish/English side I guess with our mom.

So that would be why people thought she was Native American? I saw some other people saying that and I wasn't sure why as I was just picturing generic olive skinned/black hair - mostly of middle eastern appearance or maybe greek. But I know nothing about Native Americans and even less about the Appalachians (read:nothing), so I was confused about the people who had stated that.

I was wondering, thanks anon for letting me know. I get a small smile when I learn something new from FS of all places.
