However, I was (and still am) seriously pissed that neither Merlin nor Gaius suspected that Gwen may be enchanted, neither Merlin nor Elyan bothered to say goodbye or help her with things as she was leaving Camelot (and Elyan further proved in the next ep that he didn't give a shit about his sister), and her name was never cleared, so she still thinks she cheated on the man she loves. <-- In complete agreement to all of this, but especially the part I bolded. I mean, Merlin sensed the magic in the phoenix bracelet Morgana gave Arthur, why couldn't he with Gwen's? (If he did and I just missed it, apologies in advance; I had skip around just to get through the episode.)

No, he definitely didn't sense it. I think his ability (or lack thereof) to sense magic depends on the plot.

+1. i am continually amazed and impressed with the fact that despite being constantly attacked by sorcery, this happens almost every episode:
