The shaking wasn't as bad as I expected. It was bad, obviously, but at least Arthur immediately backed off and apologized.

However, I was (and still am) seriously pissed that it never occurred to Merlin or Gaius that Gwen could be enchanted, neither Merlin nor Elyan bothered to say goodbye or help her with things as she was leaving Camelot (and Elyan further proved in the next ep that he didn't give a shit about his sister), and her name was never cleared, so she still thinks she cheated on the man she loves.

No, he definitely didn't sense it. I think his ability (or lack thereof) to sense magic depends on the plot.

Yeah, I kind of agree. Not really looking forward to Season 5.

Why should they have assumed she was enchanted? Lancelot and Gwen had a prior relationship, he was her first love and she thought he'd just returned from the dead. It made sense that she might be tempted. They shouldn't have had to be enchanted, that's what ruined it for me. It cheapened everything they had together prior to this.

I haven't seen the episode, but THIS. It wasn't as if Lancelot and Gwen didn't have a history, or Gwen didn't have a reputation for falling into Lancelot's arms while clearly making designs on Arthur.

I wouldn't have been surprised in the least if they hadn't been enchanted. Actually, the fact that they had been enchanted is kind of irritating.

Huh? The only time Gwen really fell into Lancelot's arms was after Arthur told her nothing could ever happen between them.

*ahem* It's not like she seemed too broken up about it with all the kissing and "I didn't know I could feel this way about someone" and "All long as I live, my feelings for you will never fade." Gwen forgot all about Arthur when Lancelot showed up again. Too bad he was too noble for his own good.

All the kissing? She kissed him one time, when he was about to die for her. I don't think she forgot all about Arthur, otherwise she wouldn't have been so clearly hurt when he claimed he only came to rescue her because Morgana begged him to. Also, the look she gave him over Morgana's shoulder at the end definitely gave me the impression that she was still a bit broken up about what happened between them.

Anyway, my point was that Gwen never fell into Lancelot's arms while "making designs" on Arthur, so it wouldn't have been in character for her to knowingly cheat on Arthur IMO.

The point is SHE kissed HIM. And before they left, she looked grumpy and he was pouty. I wasn't the ayrt, but I don't think it would have been out of character for Gwen to "cheat" given the circumstances. Let's just agree to disagree.

I know, I just don't think that has to mean he's the love of her life. It was a bit like when she kissed Merlin after he woke up from his coma in The Poisoned Chalice IMO.

hmmm, i dunno. i think her cheating could've still been in-character depending on how they played it. maybe not to the extent that she cheated on him THE NIGHT BEFORE THEIR WEDDING in THE THRONE ROOM but i think it would've been ic if she still had feelings for lancelot after he got resurrected and that caused some hesitation re: wedding. maybe if they didn't try to cram the whole thing in one episode, idk.

When Gwen was kidnapped (S1) and they all went to her rescue she was all over Lancelot despite their being an obvious thing between her and Arthur. And since then she's been nothing but wishy-washy when it comes to the two of them. She says she's "Arthur's" but when Lancelot comes around it's nothing but doe eyes and wistful looks and secret declarations of forbidden affection which is just all kinds of uncool.

Her pretty much telling Lance that she was in love with him and then turning around and making eyes at Arthur was the moment when I stopped liking Gwen.

I saw her saying that to Lance as her "choice" moment; to me, that was her deciding who she wanted to be with, who she felt more for and was willing to dedicate her time to. She said it knowing full well that Lance could die and she knew beyond a doubt that Lance loved her too so the whole "but he left her!!1! if he loved her, he would have stayed!!11!" argument doesn't fly for me. From that moment, I garnered that them 'being together' physically was not insanely important to her because she knew what kind of man Lancelot was, popping off at a moment's notice to go "prove himself." Hell, she harbored a crush on Lancelot for ages after he was in Camelot the first time. You expect me to believe that her undying love then just vanished because Arthur's baby blues started sparkling? No thanks, you can keep that shitty character development.

I loved Gwen. I really did. I thought she was badass. But then they made her a flake. And not only that! They made her an "I'm gonna stand here, arrange flowers, look pretty, and parrot to Arthur everything that Merlin has already said" flake. Ugh. I'm more angry about her than about Morgana. At least Morgana's shitty character 'switch' was a consistent one; she turned cray, she was consistently cray. She wasn't suddenly pyscho for the plot's sake and then never psycho again until four months later when the plot needed her to be.

They made her an "I'm gonna stand here, arrange flowers, look pretty, and parrot to Arthur everything that Merlin has already said" flake.

If they hadn't changed her dresses, she might have remained a better, stronger character.

There's never been a moment in the show when I've really been able to believe Gwen loved Arthur for Arthur and not his title. She definitely had a greater romantic interest in Lance (not sure about in love, but there was more depth of emotion involved), and even that one kiss with Merlin was more passionate than all the time she's spent sighing after Arthur. Maybe that's merely the chemistry or lack thereof between the actors - I don't know.

I wish that the writers had more guts to have not used magic as the reason why Gwen & Lancelot kissed that last time. If it had been me writing that scene, I'd have written it so they were discovered kissing in a bedroom.

Except Lance didn't really give her a choice in the matter, did he? He ran off. She woke up expecting to find him there, and he was gone. Lance was the one who decided he had to step aside, Gwen never asked that of him. She didn't even believe she and Arthur had a chance, it wasn't like she jumped into Arthur's arms the moment he arrived, nor did she approach Arthur after Lance left. Things were clearly tense by the end of the episode.

Gwen and Arthur had some moments in the S2 episodes that followed, but they didn't get "together" until 3x10, when Arthur told her he would wait for her, and she said she'd wait for him. Before that episode, both characters believed it would never come of anything. She could have been with Lance--probably would have been with him--if he hadn't run off.

As a side note, nothing happened between Gwen and Lance after Lance returned at the end of S3, so I'm not sure how to interpret the She says she's "Arthur's" but when Lancelot comes around it's nothing but doe eyes and wistful looks and secret declarations of forbidden affection which is just all kinds of uncool comment.

I said they should have suspected that she was enchanted, not assumed.

Why? Because:

1) As

fuckyeah mentioned above, Merlin had been previously shown as having an ability to sense magic.
2) Merlin knew the encounter between Gwen and "Lancelot" was arranged by Morgana (from the conversation he overheard between "Lancelot" and Agravaine).
3) Merlin is a hardcore Arthur/Gwen shipper, so it doesn't make sense (at least to me) that he wouldn't find anything out of the ordinary about Gwen cheating on Arthur the night before their wedding.

na. I don't think Merlin is an Arthur/Gwen shipper so much as he wants Arthur to be happy and if Gwen is it, he's all for it. He was all about Gwen/Lancelot at first before he knew Arthur liked her and he was kind and sympathetic to Lancelot afterward.

THIS SO MUCH. Stupid kiddie show that can't show adultery so it sticks us with the most boring and unconvincing pairing ever. UGH. Why couldn't A/G have just been a political marriage?

I'm trying to imagine what wacked out premise the writers would have come up with to make that work within their canon, especially after Arthur not marrying Elena.

Not to mention that yes, Gwen and Lancelot had a previous thing, but Gwen was (is, actually, if you don't count her being under Morgana's spell) loyal to Arthur. She didn't even seem interested of rekindling the relationship with Lancelot until she got that enchanted bracelet.

Because the people who loved Gwen should've realized that she would never LIE and sneak behind Arthur's back like that. Yes, I do think Gwen could've had a resurgence of feelings for Lancelot BUT she would've gone to Arthur and TOLD him as such, not cheated on him and lied about her feelings. Anyone who knew Gwen for 5 minutes should've known that kind of behavior wasn't like her at all and given that these people get enchanted almost every WEEK, someone should've at least looked into it. Had they done so and not found any evidence and Gwen couldn't explain her actions...but no one even thought to question it. They all just assumed it was normal for Gwen to be macking on Lancelot the night before her wedding!

The whole thing was just lazy writing, imo.
