ok, but. he says in the episode that normally gwen would get executed for what happened. camelot is not the height of ~progressive politics~. it wasn't the best reaction but i didn't think it was completely out of nowhere. arthur regularly throws heavy shit at merlin for waking him up early so uh yeah arthur has always been kind of a violent douche training to be a prat since birth etc. etc. I didn't think it was out of character at all.

aaaaand now im gonna get eaten.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-30 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't ooc to me at all. But it still made me sad and uncomfortable.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely.

So let's get eaten together. :D

[identity profile] fuckyeah.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was OOC either, just really uncomfortable to watch.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeahh I still have issues.

1) Had the writers presented what happened as a result of Camelot being an intensely misogynistic medieval society it wouldn't have been nearly so bad, but they did not. The impression I got was that the only reason we should feel sorry for Gwen was because she was actually innocent, but that had she actually cheated on Arthur she'd have deserved it. The fact that the episode ended with Arthur's ~man pain~ and that he was the one who ultimately had to forgive her, not the other way around, only adds to the oh god why.

2) Why the hell did Arthur make it a public issue? The only people who knew other than Lancelot and Gwen were Merlin and Agravaine, two people who, as far as Arthur is concerned, he can trust completely. Why the fuck was it even necessary to settle the matter before the court. Why did he not find a way out of publically admitting to having been cuckolded. Whyyy.

But yeah I actually agree with you about the shaking in particular - you're right that Arthur has a, ah, history of expressing himself violently.

[identity profile] republicanism.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
oh, no i agree with you on both points. i think it's more just the writers were trying to make it overly dramatic, hence arthur's reaction and the whole exile thing. but the whole episode was just a terribly written mess. i facepalmed so hard there's still a hand imprint on my forehead.

probably my biggest beef was WHY THE HELL DIDN'T MORGANA JUST HAVE LANCELOT KILL ARTHUR. or have gwen kill arthur. you have your dead sister's magic mind control bracelet and an evil zombie version of arthur's most trusted knight and you use these things to make your brother's girlfriend cheat on him? YOU ARE STUPID. i mean for fuck's sake morgana is about as qualified to run camelot as santorum is to run an abortion clinic.

...then again.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Morgana's actions sometimes make slightly more sense if you assume she is in love with Gwen. But even then you are right, why the fuck did she not kill Arthur when she had the chance. Gahhh.

[identity profile] republicanism.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
maybe she's trying to lull them all into a false sense of security by acting like a big idiot..? no worries im sure next season her actions will make

much more

sense............

[identity profile] republicanism.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
....also, point #1 was why i would've preferred to have gwen actually cheat on him. then there would've been some real shit going on and gwen would have a conflict aside from having to yell over the violins every time she's onscreen.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
you would actually be expected to make it a public issue at that time. And also to kill her.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Expected why who? Nobody knew!
Also, I don't think execution was actually the standard punishment for adultery but I could be wrong.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
For the king's wife, it was, because it was considered treason (it was like that for a long time, I mean, Henry VIII and all.) Plus in the actual legend, Guinivere does almost get executed for it, but a lot of weird crap happens and she doesn't die Idk about how it would be with a fiancee though.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeahhh Henry VIII was about a thousand years or so after this show is technically set - this is early medieval Britain we're looking at, the Tudors are late medieval/early modern. I've read some early medieval law tracts and I honestly don't remember them having execution as a punishment much at all. Definitely nothing about what to do if a king's wife cheated, or whether kissing would even count as adultery.

So basically, it wasn't historically accurate as far as I know, nor was it accurate to the legend because as is often acknowledged they'd bollocksed up the whole Lancelot and Guinevere storyline royally.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
This show has NEVER been historically accurate so that reasoning is complete crap. The writers do whatever the hell they want regardless of history so they had no need to have Arthur make things a public issue or banish Gwen. He could've simply ended their relationship privately and asked her to leave the castle. Instead, the writers had him humiliate her (without any of her friends standing up for her) and banish her upon threat of death without even considering that maybe there was something fishy about her behavior.

It was disgusting.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree with you. The whole thing was awful and stunk of lazy writing. The writers have never cared about sticking to the legends so they didn't even need to introduce the adultery crap in the first place. They certainly didn't need to have Gwen banished for her actions whilst under enchantment, publicly shame her, scream at her and shake her the way they did or have her constantly apologize when she wasn't in control of her actions. That the writers never revealed the enchantment was just the last straw for me.

For the thing about making it public, I actually assumed Agravaine spread the word before Arthur could stop him. For him and Morgana, the best outcome and most damage comes from the issue being as public as possible.

But yeah, major problems with that episode, which is like one giant idiot ball. I haven't even watched the last two eps of S4 because I'm scared of what I'll find.

Their individual episodes are better, but any episodes more central to the overall story arc are crap. They'd set the stage for such great character development at the beginning of S4 and then had to go ruin it all. :(

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
I guess that makes sense? Or maybe Agravaine talked him into going public, idk.
