Major Merlin S4 spoiler:

Bear in mind that this is a trusted friend who had just effectively come back from the dead. Having your ex come back from the dead the night before your wedding would mess your head up, love spell or no love spell.

Not saying Arthur had no right to be angry, just that his reaction (exiling Gwen from Camelot on pain of death) was srsly excessive.

No excuse. Cheating is still cheating. It would have been one thing if they'd just hugged (had they NOT been enchanted, that is), but actual making out? Had I been in Arthur's shoes I would have been pissed, and no excuse would have been enough to lessen the feeling of betrayal regardless how understanding I'd try to be.

I wouldn't have reacted well either, all things considered.

And I also think him exiling Gwen was understandable. Most Kings would have had her executed (and most would have expected her to be executed). Exiling her for such a slight/betrayal was rather merciful of him, IMHO.

Not everyone would consider making out with someone else one time to be cheating, actually. :P

Arthur exiling Gwen was not understandable. Not wanting to marry Gwen would been understandable. Stripping her of her home, her friends, her livelihood, and sending out to fend for herself in a society that had been shown in the past to be extremely dangerous to women (and srsly, she very nearly got raped a few episodes later - I am not making this shit up) was not understandble. That he lived in a society where it is apparently usual to execute for adultery (which was not the norm in medieval Britain, as far as I was able to ascertain) is not really an excuse.

I don't know anyone who would think their fiancee making out with someone the night before their wedding wouldn't be cheating. As far as "mistakes" go, that's a pretty shitty one to make.

Either way, it doesn't really matter what we consider to be cheating or not since, in that time, making out with another man the night before you're due to wed another would have been the equivalent of sleeping with someone these days. At least, that's the impression I've gleened from all the medieval-era stuff I've read over the years.

And yes, actually, it is understandable. For Arthur, who was born royalty and raised to be a King (which was the near equivalent of a god), it would have been completely out of character and generally nonsensical for him to give her a slap on the wrist and have her go her merry way. Gwen not only betrayed his trust, but she practically betrayed the crown. He could have easily had her executed-- which most people would have expected (hell, would have demanded if they'd known) but he did not. He made her leave his city which, yeah, was a pretty shitty thing to do, but not at all unexpected when considering his title and his personality.

Arthur is a complete anomaly. Most kings in that era would have been like Uther (were expected to be like Uther) and what do you think Uther would have done had it been him in Arthur's shoes? He would have probably had her executed on principal alone. Exile, which was generally perceived to be a "mercy" to those who went against the crown, would have been him being lenient.

I'm not denying that it was a crappy move for Gwen, but I also don't see how it's not so completely understandable for a King Arthur who hasn't quite yet reached his legendary ideal.

I'm sort of on the fence about the issue of whether or not Arthur should have exiled her. I mean, on the one hand I want to rage and be like 'nooooo you poo head' and throw things at the tv but on the other hand Arthur is a King...and he was humiliated by Gwen's actions (a serving girl betraying the King of Camelot) so I understand there needed to be a big show of 'I will not let you disrespect me', as awful a decision as it was.

Exactly. I think it was quite merciful on his part (shitty, but merciful). Any other king would have had her head (or, rather, had her burned at the stake (as a woman)) for the blatant disrespect and betrayal.

Actually, wasn't Gwen and Lancelot's actions considered treasonous? One of the four basic acts of treason (English law) is: "if a man do violate the king's companion, or the king's eldest daughter unmarried, or the wife of the king's eldest son and heir...".

So yeah. If what Gwen and Lancelot did actually did fall under treason, Gwen got off REALLY lightly.

You argue like someone with very little experience of life. And concerning something that happened in a show you're not even caught up on. Perhaps it's time to take a step back and think before you go on making yourself look even more stupid.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 20. I don't have much experience of life. So do tell me, oh great wise one, what my "very little experience" has to do with the conversation. #sarcasm.

I saw the scene, actually, and caught a few of the following eps on TV. Not that it matters. Regardless of whether or not I'm caught up doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on an issue I know the facts of. But you, as the incredible wise person you are, positively must let me know how I'm oh-so-wrong and misguided.

I see a lot of shit coming out of your mouth (fingers?) but absolutely nothing to back it up. Next time why not try to refrain from being a fucking stupid bitch and say what you found wrong with my argument instead of throwing petty insults and nonsensical accusations.

Ugh, why I allow myself to get worked up by Internet trolls, I have no idea.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a troll, and I won't be arguing with you since people have already made good points that you fail to understand anyway.

Calling someone a bitch while whining about petty insults? Classy and not at all hypocritical, eh?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
~You're~ talking about class,,,? That's rich. How about you learn how to not insult people and then not complain when they insult you back; retard.

I CALL TROLL...!
