I haven't seen the movie (yet), but isn't it a better aesop that attractive (or at least kind-looking, I can't really see him as hot) people can do villainous things? It's really rare that you can tell a real person is going to fuck everyone over just by looking at them, so...

OP

(mild spoilers, but it's in the trailers anyhow)

I suppose that was the concept they were going with when they made it, but it would've made that point better if the Lorax hadn't tried to kill the Onceler in his sleep.

If you'd seen the movie, you'd know that the Lorax didn't try to kill the Onceler in his sleep.

OP

(more spoilers)

I have seen the movie. The Lorax puts his bed with the sleeping Onceler in the water, fully intending him to die over that waterfall. It doesn't work because a barbaloot gets involved.

fuck you LJ for getting rid of subject headers for spoilers

The Onceler's foot plops into the water as he's going downstream, steering the bed down a different path. I didn't even catch it the first time.

I'll admit, I didn't notice until the second time I saw the movie, but there's a part where the bed comes to a fork in the river, and the Once-ler's foot drops off the bed, sending it toward the part with the waterfall. It was the Lorax's intent to send him down the part that didn't go to the waterfall. (Though I doubt that would have stopped the Once-ler from just coming back again later.)

Aside from what was mentioned by the above comments about the Onceler's foot, the Lorax also shows visible surprise at the waterfall and even apologizes to the Onceler afterward, saying he didn't know. He just wanted him to float away and get lost, not die.

Except we get that all the time in media. And in the original the Once-ler shows up in a simple covered wagon and starts knitting things, he isn't exactly threatening looking at the beginning. The point of having him faceless and ambiguous is so that he can represent anyone, not just pretty, quirky people who had pressure from their crappy families. A lot of people start businesses because they have a natural drive to make something of themselves or make people's lives easier like the Once-ler from the original story. This Once-ler is way too specific and therefore it shrinks the metaphor down.

At any rate, the aesop is destroyed because the other evil guy in the movie has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Yeah he was greedy and played dirty, but he was also providing the town with clean air, something people need to survive. They weren't exactly living bad lives either under his thumb. Sheltered yeah, but BAD? Not so much. He's not the one who destroyed the environment in order to provide a service, and yet he's the one who is soooo super evil according to this film.

To make a point on the last one, he WAS willing to pollute the environment even further to make a profit out of selling air in plastic bottles. It's evident he only gives a damn about his financial success, even at the expense of the people.

Makes me wonder where he was getting all that air from. Another plot hole, maybe?
