i think the onceler fandom's the most hilarious thing i've seen on tumblr so far, though. i can't hate something that spawned something so ridiculous.

ngl, the Once-ler fandom makes me laugh a little. But, on the flip side, I can kind of see why they designed the characters the way that they did. Zefron and the Once-ler look alike, so there's that, for one thing. Also, I thought the point was that it's not just the people you can't see (and who might be monsters!) that screw things up. It's also the characters that you start to care for, and who are also attractive.

Yeah, they screw up too, anyone can.

At least, that's the way I saw it. |D

Full disclosure, I didn't really like the original Lorax book either, so...

psst Zefron didn't voice him.

If anything, the movie gave us the glorious trainwreck that's the Once-ler fandom on Tumblr, which may or may not be a good thing. I get the impression a lot of the Once-ler fen ignore/handwave the unsavory parts of the character, though.

That said, the original book was never one of my favorite Seuss books either. Not a bad book, it just didn't capture my imagination like, say, the Butter-Battle Book did.

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i haven't even seen the new Lorax (not a fucking chance, even if the tickets weren't $10 I would never get back) but the whole Once-ler thing just reminds me so much of the huge fandom revolving around Jojo from Horton Hears A Who that cropped up when that came out.

Starting to wonder if this is going to become A Thing.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I just snort-laughed remembering the Jojo fandom

Your icon is so cuuuuuute!

(Irrelevant, but.)

[identity profile] dammayanti.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
hahaha that's the first thing I remembered! and nobody I know remembers it either - their loss, it was as glorious as this

[identity profile] designercandy.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like maybe I didn't have a complete childhood because I never read the book as a child. *shame*

[identity profile] fly-buggy-fly.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it the first time two years ago (I'm in my late 20s) and loooooove it now.

I must know about the hilarity of the Once-ler fandom. I just know it exists.

Lorax is actually one of my favorite of his books, and I love the original animated version. So yeah, this movie kind of made me want to die.

except the original book has him being repentant and giving the kid the seed. it wasn't like he was a flat-out villain.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-30 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the movie but all this fandom over the Onceler confuses me to no end. Is it just because he's attractive/voiced by Zac Efron? Does the movie miss the whole point of the book?

I haven't seen the movie (yet), but isn't it a better aesop that attractive (or at least kind-looking, I can't really see him as hot) people can do villainous things? It's really rare that you can tell a real person is going to fuck everyone over just by looking at them, so...

i like flip flop between being really amused and really weirded out by the onceler's devoted tumblr fandom. the weirded-out part is mostly driven by the onceler/onceler porn that i see when im browsing the tag for some laffs

altho i agree OP, the film sucked and it did miss the point of the book :/

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Just to get this out, the point of Onceler's new look isn't that he's "attractive", but that he's an everyday sort of guy with a dream to be a successful entrepreneur. He's flawed, kind of a jerk bag at times, and fucks up big time in the end, living the rest of his life holed up in a rinky dink trap laden house regretting his decision every day of his life for 50 years.

THAT'S what makes him attractive to people. He's not fucking perfect, and it's so often that people assume the attraction is due solely to his looks, not his story.

The reason they made the Once-ler likable is cause they wanted him to have a redemption arc of sorts. They wanted you to think that you could become the Once-ler, after all if only someone completely, absolutely evil could do that then obviously normal people could never destroy the environment. I do think the whole thing with his family was mishandled, though. It was annoying that they mostly focused on his aunt and mother. >_< Still, I can see why they did the story the way they did.

Hahaha the "Once-ler fandom". All the shit on tumblr is like fandom itself condensed in the most ridiculous manner possible. This is fandom. If someone asked me "What is fandom?" I would just show them that tag on tumblr. It's fucking that.</>

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still so confused as to why people are so blown away by this fandom. I'm not seeing much of a difference between this one and many other fandoms out there. It's almost like when it comes to this movie, everyone forgets all the weird shit they've already seen in other fandoms and starts over with a completely blank slate.

The Lorax. It causes amnesia, man...

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not the Onceler from the book.

So, whatever to this bull-shit film. If I want my kids to watch The Lorax, they're reading the book or watching that 70's version.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This had been said, but I always thought that the point of the original Once-ler was that he's ALL of us. He's not bad, he's just short-sighted.

There's a line he has in the 1970s cartoon were he's arguing with himself, trying to justify what he's doing: "Well, if I didn't do this, than someone else would!" That's very powerful to me, because how many of us have thought that? Especially when it comes to wasting resources. It's not about being evil, just living our lives, doing things like leaving on the lights because everyone else is wasting electricity, too. And if other businesses are also using up resources...of course many business owners also "go with the flow" like the rest of us.

So, after reading the original book as a kid, I never thought of him as "bad." His facelessness just made me realize that we are all the Once-ler. That's what gets lost, in my opinion, by giving him a face. Although ironically, I prefer a generic everyman to some kind of monster for that very reason.

[identity profile] teira-chan.livejournal.com 2012-04-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly irritated by how the movie company felt the need to make him *~*sympathetic and put-upon*~*, but this is probably an unpopular opinion.

And he's too young-looking. And he doesn't smoke. And I don't know why I felt the need to add that last part but it'd make him more sinister. :T

...I liked his song in the 2012 movie though.

Okay, now you all can hate me ;w;
