The reason they made the Once-ler likable is cause they wanted him to have a redemption arc of sorts. They wanted you to think that you could become the Once-ler, after all if only someone completely, absolutely evil could do that then obviously normal people could never destroy the environment. I do think the whole thing with his family was mishandled, though. It was annoying that they mostly focused on his aunt and mother. >_< Still, I can see why they did the story the way they did.

But... he already had a redemption arc in the original, without having to be likable in his youth. The whole story is him trying to make up for what he's done by making someone understand why things need to change and giving them the tool they need to do it (though that does raise the question of why he didn't just plant the seed himself, but I assume it's because he was old enough when his change of heart happened that he knew he wouldn't be able to survive long enough to make sure the tree grew and thrived).
