You know what, you're not the only one. I love comics too, but I also can't stand most pre 1985 comics. I remember reading my mom's and uncle's old comics as a kid, and thinking they were corny and sort of creepy even then, haha. But yeah, also recognizing that they're influential and iconic in many ways.

It's true. The Silver and especially Bronze age of comics were silly at best, grotesquely cartoonish at worst. A lot of this can be blamed on the Comics Code Authority, of course. The Silver Age had some truly great stories, but you have to do a LOT of digging.

But the modern age isn't much better.

I only recently started reading a mountain of Batman (following this: http://www.therealbatmanchronologyproject.com/the-modern-age/ ) and I can't tell you how many times I looked at a comic from around 1991 (especially Legends of the Dark Knight and thought to myself -- "90s comics, man."

I like some, but because they are cheesy, so I understand what you are saying. The older comics aren't bad really, just different.

haha, check out superheroes.memebase.com if you think you're the only one. They post stuff making fun of/demonstrating the absurdity of the ridiculous older stuff all the time.

You might be biased for not having grown up with them, but the people who did are just as biased the other way. When they get angry with you for not loving the comics of their childhood, they're just angry that you're not giving them validation.

You're allowed to like what you like and not like what you don't. Comics continuities changes so often, it's perfectly understandable that you're going to prefer one incarnation over others and you know what? That's okay. Anyone who doesn't understand that is just being a close-minded jerk who refuses to accept that someone doesn't agree with them.

HEE. Nah, the ~silver age~~~~ ain't for everyone. Shit changes all the time, you're allowed to have a preference!

I feel this way about superhero comics in general. I hate the art that's currently in fashion, I think it's ugly and there's no variety. Women are seen as sex objects and are continually drawn in painful ways. And why is Rob Liefeld still drawing comics? No one likes his shit. And since I've read so much manga, I hate how American comics do their layouts, it's ugly to me. And I'm not a fan of how the color looks, there's too much and it looks over-saturated.

Marvel had some pretty great stories pre-1985, but DC was terrible most of the time, except for the Teen Titans (as far as I have read, at least). Also, referring to your image, Fantastic Four #1 is actually surprisingly good for 1961, IMO.

Tend to agree...I feel the same way, sadly, about a lot of older TV and movies and (with some stunning exceptions) literature. I'm sure it has to do with us and the artistic works we prefer being a product of our age, just as fans of the earlier works are/were products of theirs.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-02 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I'm in agreement.

More or so all the old comics tend to be a bit silly, but one should try to look at those with the time and customs in mind. The CCA had a lot to do with what could be drawn or even talked about (for example Reed and Susan getting married was a scandal, since it meant there could and would be sex even if it's not shown in the comic).

I'd say the most important thing about the Golden and Silver Age was that they laid out the structures we have been building on since then. The art was simple, but realistic which was the point of those eras. We are just used to seeing things like they're now. It's good to appreciate the history as it is, but there's no need to like it as such if you don't want to. Still, I think those who get offended usually do so because they feel you don't give the old stuff a chance. That I understand. If you have valid arguments, you're doing well and even the most offended will hopefully understand.

Yours truly, who's written studies of comics throughout her university years as well as writing thesis on manga.
