I'm a little confused...I haven't seen many people who insist that Jack and Ianto are strictly gay. Most fics I've read acknowledge Ianto's love for Lisa and still have Jack being...Jack. I guess I might be missing something.

Most things I've seen show Ianto as being bi and Jack as being pansexual or mostly being Jack. I don't think I've seen much of anything saying that either are strictly gay. So idek.

Maybe it's an issue in a particular corner of the Janto fans, and OP is only familiar with that? I don't read much fic in Torchwood, so I'm just guessing.

I suspect the "weird corner" hypothesis, too.

I know that some people got into Torchwood specifically because they heard there was a "gay couple" on it; "canon slash" was a major selling point in some multifandom comms I watched back in the day. This probably drew in at least some viewers without any prior knowledge of the characters or the universe. They wouldn't know about Jack's history with Rose and the Doctor.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of these particular Jack/Ianto fans, who started watching the show specifically for them, clumped together. Voila: one weird corner of a much larger fandom.

If anything, I saw a lot of Janto fans upset that Ianto wasn't portrayed as bisexual in canon, but rather "straight-except-for-Jack."

There are bisexuals on television. But they are always, always women. Ianto and Jack is the rare exception to the rule. I wish there were more men bisexuals. Not for slash reasons, I am just tired of that damn trope. Writers, making the hottest female character on your show bisexual doesn't make you forward thinking, just a another writer who went with that cliche while trying to appeal to straight men.

Not to mention they're almost always a shitty representation of women bisexuals too. Making out with girls sometimes but only ever loving guys is not the bisexual experience.

well to be fair, there are some male bisexuals on tv.

...buuuut they're usually portrayed as kind of creepy and inappropriate...

and a lot of the female bisexuals don't really get a positive portrayal either...

You should watch Revenge. It's a fabulous show and has a lot of people with a more fluent sexuality from what I've gathered.

The only representation I've seen of either of them as gay rather than bi is in Miracle Day, with all those dreadful gay jokes directed at Jack. Otherwise I really don't know where this secret comes from. In canon there is the Ianto is straight except for Jack thing, which couldn't be more opposite to your secret.

Ugggh- agree'd about Miracle Day. I mean, there weren't that many gay jokes, but there were just enough to make me go "Uhhhh... the writers remember that Jack isn't just attracted to men... right?"

But whatevs... I'm borrowing some head-canon, from another user, where the crack from Series 5 of Doctor Who came and ate up 'Miracle Day' along with 'Children of Earth'.

Okay, I'm the first to admit that Janto when presented as if Jack loves Ianto in a way he never loved anyone before and never will love someone since doesn't have a canon leg to stand on. Jack as exclusively gay is also not canon. In fact, Ianto as gay isn't canon. Canonically, Jack's omnisexual and Ianto is a 1 on the Kinsey scale.

That said, I think you are crazy expecting OTPers to validate your Jack/Rose ship. They love their AU world where Jack and Ianto are special together, and there's nothing wrong with that. So what if it isn't canon, it makes them happy and that's what fandom is for.

I don't think Ianto's a 1 by any means. He's not as open with his affections and appreciations than any of the others, but he was definitely considering Hart's offer for a moment (before the "he's a psychopath" won out)

And I still think they're special together, just not the first for either of them and not the last for Jack *sadface*
