Agreed. But I will admit that HTTYD and Tangled made up for it with the brilliant use of colors, backgrounds and general atmosphere. So I'm not giving up on CG just yet (and I actually like how pretty Finding Nemo, Wall-E and Up are).
Most of the time though? Yeah, I find it ugly.

(IMO Toy Story is the ugliest animated film I've ever seen.)

just toy story, or including the sequels? because it is pretty ugly but it was made in 95 so i give it some slack

Just Toy Story. (Tho Toy Story 2 is also pretty ugly.)

I've seen a lot of computer generated graphics and art since time immemorial, and I think they could've done a better job. Even if it was the 90s.

uh... no, they couldn't have, because it WAS the 90's. They were literally inventing the wheel when it comes to CG animation. It was the first entirely CG feature film, of course it's going to look bad now, but back then it was mind-blowingly good.

you have to realize that CG animation takes a shitload of work-just as much, if not more than traditional animation. there were hundreds of people working on Toy Story, modelling the characters, giving them skeletons to move them with, animating them, texturing them, lighting them, creating everything from scratch.

I'm so sick of people acting like it was such an effortless thing. It wasn't. they built something entirely new from the ground up. the fact that CG has progressed so far in such a short amount of time is something that happened almost entirely because they made such great strides that first time and kept building and building on their knowledge until we ended up with the films of today.

I was actually aware of all that, but never mind. I was just expressing an opinion. (For the record, I liked Casper, which preceded Toy Story's animation.) The reason I think they could've done a better job, is because they had the means, but it would've required a lot more time, research and effort than what they already had accomplished. I'm not saying they should've done a better job, but they could've.

THANK YOU. Regardless of whether you're a fan of 3D or not, that movie was a masterpiece in sheer technological innovation alone, not to mention the other milestones it set for the industry.

Was it really all that? Toy Story doesn't look much better than the seasons of CG shows like Reboot and Beast Wars that were around the same time (or before, in Reboot's case). Yeah, Toy Story was the first feature-length, but they weren't inventing the wheel.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS, bless you, THIS. I've dabbled in both traditional and computer animation, and CG takes a LOT more effort from the starting gate. And both require a keen eye for physics/realistic movement and attention to detail.

Until you've seen how computer animation is done from scratch, don't dismiss it as "cheaper".

And seriously, compare the first Toy Story to Toy Story 3. It's downright primitive.
