If you hate CG animation so much, why do you even watch it.

[identity profile] apologizeg.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Madagascar is one of my favorite movies ever *_*

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. But I will admit that HTTYD and Tangled made up for it with the brilliant use of colors, backgrounds and general atmosphere. So I'm not giving up on CG just yet (and I actually like how pretty Finding Nemo, Wall-E and Up are).
Most of the time though? Yeah, I find it ugly.

(IMO Toy Story is the ugliest animated film I've ever seen.)

So basically, "All films of this type look ugly except for the ones that I like". That's a... ground-breaking secret.

I think it's overused and rarely justified. Tangled is IMO one movie that REALLY justifies its use, from the huge attention to detail to Rapunzel's hair and to the lantern scene. How to Train Your Dragon definitely justified it, as well. Those are both gorgeous movies and I honestly don't know if they would be any better/worse had they been traditionally animated.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Too bad your post is ugly.
And Toy Story is GROUNDBREAKING .. you would NOT have HTTYD or any other CG movie if Toy Story had failed.

you do realize no one's forcing you to watch these movies, right? Also, someone who thinks Ice Age is garbage is someone whose taste I'd personally question.

Generally, I think CG animation works better, if your protagonists aren't human. I really loved Tangled, but I think human faces often look very generic in CGI. With toys and Monsters and highly cartoony animals this isn't much of a problem.

I love both CGI and "traditional" animation.

I have favorite movies in both styles, and movies I disliked a lot in both styles.

It doesn't have to be a competition between the styles.

Just wanted to use that gif, don't actually care much... YMMV. I put off watching Zemeckis's Beowulf for a long time because I thought it looked so awful, and even though I ended up finding it less horrible than I'd thought it'd be, it's not great. Generally speaking, badly done CGI can be very offputing (uncanny valley and all that), but then again when it's done welll...

meh. 'S your opinion. And I think cg animation tends to look best on non-human characters

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)

toy story could have looked like a child drew it and it would still be a wonderful movie. don't really care about the rest of those, but seriously, how can you think toy story is a crap movie? i'm saddened by this.

Toy Story was ugly? ...You can't possibly be older than 15.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who studies 3d animation, I must admit I can kind of agree with this. Sometimes I enjoy the "art of" books of 3d movies more then the actual movie itself.

There are tons of talent working at all the major studios, but I don't think the 3d technology is intuitive enough yet to really capture what these artists are capable of. It's getting better and better with each film, and there are certainly aspects of these films that are gorgeous and artistically impressive, but sometimes I still think a 2d animated film that Chuck Jones spent a week on is more appealing to my eyes.

And that's the challenge of 3d, the artists are completely aware of it's downfalls and they struggle to make it work on an artistic level. You should at least give Toy Story a pass because for when it was made, well I consider it gorgeous just because of all they accomplished at such an early time, and the Toy story movies are not even my favorite.

Side note, I thought Avatar was really ugly. The backgrounds were really nice but the characters and alien monster things were horribly done.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, I feel the same about 2D and anime/manga-style animation. To each their own, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Toy Story is garbage?

Oh no you didn't. *insert Laverne Roberts finger-wag*

Me too, OP. I mean, I loved Up and Wall-E but I'd have loved them even more if they were 2D. I feel that the real art of animation has been lost.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's the blockiness of the designs that bothers me. Also, I have a lot of trouble seeing most CGI characters as "alive"--the eye contact just isn't very direct, and there seems to be little artistic exaggeration of motion and expressions. I think this is something that will be improved upon in the future, though.
