Dear world,

Battle Royale was not an original concept. SEE: Mean Guns. It was probably done before that, it will be done again... let's stop pretending Battle Royale is original and superior just because it's Japanese. Protip: people who aren't weeaboos have legitimately NEVER HEARD OF BATTLE ROYALE.

Sincerely,

The rest of the world

Don't forget The Long Walk or The Running Man.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-04-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I was about to say that.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a little confused to be honest. Why does the lottery keep getting brought up? Is there some different lottery I didn't read? Because that was about a stoning. It seems so far removed from battle royale or hunger games to me and I don't get why people keep drawing parallels. Long Walk and Running Man I get, mind.

people who aren't weeaboos have legitimately NEVER HEARD OF BATTLE ROYALE

This x1000. Yes it is totally possible that Suzanne Collins did not read the damn book or see the damn movie. You would have to be into cult/foreign horror to know about this movie as an average American. I totally believe a 50 year old white lady could have managed to get through life avoiding it. How many times have you even seen Battle Royale mentioned in mainstream media...

(Anonymous) 2012-04-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
To play devil's advocate, Collins was is in the entertainment business and it got enough hype from people like Tarantino so it's not that much of a stretch.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's possible, but the people saying she HAAAAAD to know about it and it's impossible that she didn't, well, no it isn't.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with you about the shutting up about BR vs HG but uh, nice to see that people from Asia are either not people or all weeaboos. Or perhaps they don't count because surely they don't speak English or participate in English-speaking fandom?

Seriously though, generalizations like "only weeaboos" are grossly incorrect.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Butthurt weeaboo right here ^

I'm not sure which is worse: people using "weeaboo" as a serious insult or people tripping over themselves to escape the label.

Fucking nerd hierarchy bullshit.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-04-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, it was not an original concept. But it was popular enough here, at least between people who are into cinema, to be something people know about without being a "weeaboo".

[identity profile] tonicat.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This! BR was very popular among movie buffs in Europe as well as in the U.S.
It had nothing to do with the fact that it was from Japan but everything to do with the fact that the movie was awesome.

[identity profile] 100101011.livejournal.com 2012-04-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm honestly surprised SO many people have heard of battle royale...i saw it a long time ago in japan and never even realized it was such a thing. but seriously, how many more secrets are we going to have about this exact topic? cause it might be getting just a teensy bit repetitive.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think once Tarantino came out about it being one of his faves, people started getting into it.

Ah yes. Because EVERYONE EVER who likes BR is a weeaboo. Not like we didn't stumble across the book in the book store and like the idea. Nope.

A hate-fueled rant born out of ignorance hidden behind the anonymity of the internet. Real smooth, Internet Tough Guy. You're so original. You're exactly the kind of person this secret is talking about. I take it you'd be on The Hunger Games's side of the argument? *eye roll*

(Anonymous) 2012-04-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
There was... no hate there? I mean I know you think you're a big kid using the phrase "anonymity of the Internet" so here is your head pat & cookie :3 Now off to bed.

Love the eye roll too omg. So classically juvenile!!! Have an extra cookie :3

yep. this, almost entirely.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Battle Royale fans don't think that it was the first of its kind. Hunger Games fans, though, act like they've never seen anything like it before. Can't blame Battle Royale fandom for lolwut.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I know a lot of people who know Battle Royale. Some are anime fans, some are "normal" Americans (lol), and a lot are fucking Japanese people, because it was really famous here.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
...People who aren't weeaboos have never heard of BR? What about people who are just...film nerds? I watched it several years ago because Quentin Tarantino said it was his favorite movie. (And then sat there for two hours going "you would, QT. YOU WOULD.")
