MASH fandom seems to have shifted from the days of yore. We wrote so much porn.

Seriously. I was in old school MASH fandom and the porn I have saved (personal reading only, bc let's be honest, most of old fandom has had their fics lost to time/the internet) is pretty high in volume considering the general fic output MASH had in general.

[identity profile] ameonna.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I used to watch this show with my mom and I never shipped it (because my mom) but OMFG I can SO see it and I wish I had known about this when I first got on the Internet all those years ago. XD

I feel like my life would have been improved!

(Anonymous) 2012-04-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I totally shipped them too. I always thought as Hawkeye was driven more and more insane, reaching out for so many attainable women, that the concept of completely straight-laced Hunnicut (devoted to his wife, a family man) would become a concept he'd be enthralled with - and I could totally see misplaced jealousy (the contained family unit he wished he had with his father, the way he refused to fall into traps of alcoholism or loose women) eventually climaxing into confused, desperate kisses.

...I always call queer on extremely sexual characters, though. Especially mentally fucked ones like Hawkeye. But I swear to god Frank was more in the closet than any of the others, or a cross dresser - I bet Hot Lips walked in on him drunkenly trying on her dresses more than once

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, soooo with you on Frank. There were more than a few lines that implied he was...insecure about his masculinity. And Hawkeye has always read as more than a bit Captain Jack Harknessy to me.

"I bet Hot Lips walked in on him drunkenly trying on her dresses more than once"

...I kind of want to read fic about that now. Or write it myself, even.

[identity profile] chwheeler.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Frank. I used to hate his guts but as I go along and keep watching the show over and over, I just start to pity for him. Especially when you start adding up all of the lines about how horrible his life actually was growing up. Frank is so screwed up.

Oooh, now I want fic. screwedup!Hawkeye and screwedup!Frank are such perfect fodder for fic, especially if you put them in the same fic.

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 09:29 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, part of the beauty of Frank was he was so fun to hate, but then the show could make you feel sorry for him, too. As for the above quoted line....yeah...Hawkeye/Frank is my anti-ship (along with shipping Radar with, well, anybody besides a nurse or two) but I totally would not be surprised if there was a little UST there on Frank's side.

[identity profile] chwheeler.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree about the anti-ship stance. It's way too vitriolic of a relationship. But yeah, I could totally see the UST coming from Frank's side. He's so incredibly insecure. I think he could secretly admire/be jealous of Hawkeye. Especially with the fact that everyone likes Hawkeye, the embodiment of everything Frank thinks he's supposed to hate (hates the war, womanizer, doesn't take things seriously, friendly), while everyone hates Frank, who's trying to be the perfect person of the time (wife, doctor, army man, patriotic).

Sorry if this is tl;dr. :) I started thinking about it and all of these thoughts just started forming.

[identity profile] vicfrankenstein.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I haven't rewatched many episodes to notice those lines, but I always "liked" Frank because, well, Charles was okay but boring, and Frank seemed more complex and amusing. Mostly how he acted when he talked to his wife on the phone... I'm not sure what I used to think, but in retrospect he seems pretty afraid of her.

[identity profile] chwheeler.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Frank never seemed to reach the "love to hate" category for me, and I'm not sure why. I definitely find him more amusing now than I used to, so I don't really hate him anymore.

Yeah, it would be interesting to compile the things we know about his relationship with his wife. I think he was afraid of a lot of things.

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, don't feel bad, OP! It's a great ship. Who cares if you write porn about it? I love this pairing. In my one of my many headcanons (yes. I have multiple headcanons depending on what mood I'm in) they totally reunited years later in San Francisco in the early 70's and lived near Castro Street. They were so married on the show.

[identity profile] dupont-circle.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Agree so hard. It's a great ship and I love the 'and years later they met again and became a couple' thing for Hawk/BJ stories :)

[identity profile] theoriginal-ist.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Aw. I adore this pairing. I watched this show years later with my mom and had to squelch the ship adoration, but that is what the internet is for, is it not? I can totally see them working out since they were basically married on the show anyway. Now I want to watch M*A*S*H or find some fic. =/

I just saw the episode where they find the abandoned half-korean baby - so cute!

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
MASH is mostly PG? Seriously? You must be looking in the wrong places OP.

Because when I was 14, I basically learned how sex worked from NC-17 MASH fics. Also, I probably was permanently scarred for life from all the horrifically, horrifically dark (and for obvious reasons, very believable and psychologically twisted) R-rated darkfic in that fandom.

Anyway, I could never ship the two of them because BJ's faithfulness to Peg was always such an important part of his character to me I could never get into that headspace that allows me to ignore or deal with canon relationships whenever I want to ship characters in other fandoms. I totally slash Hawkeye/Trapper though (and damn did they make it easy).

Where do you suggest looking for fic, just out of curiosity? Sorry, I love M*A*S*H but I haven't been able to find much of a fandom.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I know ff.net has a reputation as a cesspit, but I have found a whole lot of seriously good MASH fanfic there. And basically, if you find one great fic, the author most likely has written and favorited a whole lot more great fic, and favorited a whole lot of great writers.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-05 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any M*A*S*H/China Beach crossover fic out there? There has to be, right? Man oh man, I'd read the shit out of that right now.

[identity profile] vicfrankenstein.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
M*A*S*H secret! <3 I could totally see that too.

Off topic:

I posted in LJ's M*A*S*H comm years ago saying I liked the BJ/Potter seasons more than the Trapper/Henry because BJ and Potter don't cheat and I was called out on it because it was... simplistic, if I remember correctly. Years later, it's still kinda true but I understand why. I'm more comfortable with the idea that a lot of men have a moral difficulty with the whole idea of having casual sex while off at war. That doesn't make any characters better or worse, and it's all just something that I... like to pretend is true in life even if I know it isn't.

Plus they JUST played the episode where Beej is in love with the reporter and that's the one that gets me. I love that episode. I had to say something.

LOL! I was watching that ep too and the person I was watching it was like--I hate her! Stop trying to push him into cheating on his wife!
