I feel like his character is the remains of an abandoned love triangle or something. Like, the author was going to add another one, and then she realized the series is nothing but love triangles and unrequited love. So now he's a relationship troll.

I admit, I don't know anything about the situation, but for me (and many people, I have a feeling) when things are truly difficult and there is little I can do, keeping myself busy in one way or another is usually right at the top of my list. While I'm sure he wanted to be there every minute for his kid (who IMDB says was 3 months premie) but there is a point where distraction is needed to keep from going nuts with worry. Perhaps doing the part served perfectly for that purpose. :)

Don't worry OP I do this too. I have a fanfic that is 20,000 words so far centering on a character who has no lines and who there is only two lines of information about in canon. I love fics like that! To me that is the cool thing about fanfiction, seeing people's expansion of the worlds and interpretation of characters that aren't so central. I read fanfic for the minor characters- the mains get enough coverage in the source material imho.
