What has Cassandra Clare done? I've never read anything of hers, but I've heard negative sentiments towards her expressed here before and I'm really curious.

In short: plagiarism. Look her up in fandom_wank, it's quite an entertaining story.

Okay, first, not a Cassie Claire fan now or then (not much of one anyway. I did like the Very Secret Diaries a lot. Very funny.). I subbed to her fic mailing list and followed her journal for a while b/c I mildly liked the Draco Trilogy she was writing (I ended up hating it when it was finished and not following her anymore). That said...........

A lot of people hate her b/c of actions surrounding the plagiarism. She was unapologetic and refused to admit she'd done anything wrong. They didn't like her disclaimers (not detailed enough, etc.)

It's a buttload of wank about nothing, really, the plagiarism. If I got off my lazy butt, I probably still have saved emails from her list where she asked list members to contribute their fave writing passages and quotes from music, movie, tv shows, etc. and she'd put them into her fanfic. She even ran contests to get people to submit quotes to her. So, she and her list members knew about the quotes but others reading the fic didn't and accused her of plagiarism.

Also, a lot of people hate her for "profiting" off her fic. Her laptop was stolen (some people don't believe it was) from her apartment and a friend/fan of hers asked her fans for donations to buy a new one. I don't see she did anything wrong here but it caused a lot of wank.

Fans will directly buy fanart/commission/pay a fanartist to create a piece about their fave copyrighted character but it's not okay to donate money to a fic author to replace a laptop. OOOOOOkay. The hypocritical sentiment kills me. If it's okay for a fanartist to profit, it's okay for a fic writer to profit. Cassie held a gun to her fans head and made them donate!!!!!!!!!! SHE'S EVIL. It's also not like she said, "Okay, I'll write whatever pairing you want but first I want you to pay me $15 before I do.", the way fanartists do w/their drawings.

Note: I didn't like the lack of transparency about this since part of the money was supposed to go to charity.

A lot people don't like her b/c she comes across as an elitist, entitled asshole who thinks her farts don't smell. I fall in this category. I tend to think the plagiarism accusation as being toothless b/c I was on her list and saw her post requesting quotes. However, her behaviour about it was unacceptable when she was called on it by people not her lists and also things like this:

Here's part of the wank: http://www.journalfen.net/users/bookshop/10526.html
http://wiki.fandomwank.com/index.php/Aja
http://wiki.fandomwank.com/index.php/Wherein_Cassie%27s_Good_Name_Is_Besmirched

So, she's very wankable.

She didn't just plagiarize quotes and tiny passages. There were giant chunks of text she stole without acknowledgement. But even if it was minor, it's suddenly fine if a few people knew about it but the rest don't? No. You have to acknowledge. That's the most basic rule in writing ANYTHING, and she failed at it. You can't get away with plagiarism by saying "well some of my fans requested it be put in there" and not tell the rest of the world about it. It's still plagiarism.

The reason the laptop thing pissed people off is because she was using her popularity for profit. If a popular fanartist complained about losing their laptop and asked for donations, people would have the same reaction as they did to CC. Your analogy is invalid. The real equivalent to an artist selling their copyrighted art is CC selling prints of her writing for cash, and then buying her laptop. But she didn't do that.

I don't think she's scum and I don't think she's wonderful. I'm fairly neutral towards her. But I do understand where the wank is coming from and I think most of it is very valid.

Well, I think most people are more pissed about the Pamela Dean plagiarism.

Also, a lot of people hate her for "profiting" off her fic. Her laptop was stolen (some people don't believe it was) from her apartment and a friend/fan of hers asked her fans for donations to buy a new one. I don't see she did anything wrong here but it caused a lot of wank.

The asking money to have her stolen laptop replaced is not the part of the story that fans get up in arms about. I think they all agree that if the story had ended here, they may have thought the people who donated to CC to have buy a new laptop stupid or idiotic, but also that's their choice if they want to make it.

When I hear this story, it's the second part that people get riled up over. I've only heard it second hand, but it gets brought up a lot. Apparently, a fan of CC's who had a mother dying of cancer that was starting to really take a toll on the fan financially saw the success CC had in getting money for a luxury like a laptop (from what I understand, CC got more than she needed for a new laptop) and asked CC if she'd put her dark powers to collect to a good cause, i.e. asking fans to donate to an even better cause than a stolen laptop,l the financial and physical well being of a family dealing with cancer.

And CC not only said no, but blasted her for making such a selfish request and made her feel bad.

As I said, I've only heard the story second hand and read the article about it, so you'll want to look it up. But if it's true, it makes a big difference in that little CC tidbit.
